Travel warrants have been discontinued for use on the National Rail network, and no longer acceptable for travel. However there are still some in issue out there and most holders of them will be able to travel (although not officially) as long as the guard is happy.

Obviously I have no experience of the services but only of the rail network.

Warrants are still valid and exchanged for tickets at the ticket office. I issued one today.

They are getting phased out and tickets are booked by e-mail or fax via Hogg Robinson. Best done by fax as the man who does our issues sits next to it.

Even the Forces Railcards (which used to be free) cost a bit now!

They went up to £2 a few years back, then £12 and I think they are currently £20.

Still worth it as 1 medium distance trip's saving can cover the initial outlay.

... and since the 20th May you cannot use the HM Forces Railcard for peak travel times ... I tried to use my railcard last week at 20 past 9, to be informed that you cannot use railcards until after 10am !! Luckily I wasn't going far, but could make quite a difference if you have a long journey.

That's duff info - either the person you spoke to was wrong, or that particular train company has made up its own rules outside the ATOC (Association of Train Companies) agreement - you can use the HM Forces railcard anytime, and get discount off standard and first class fares. It's the Young Person's/Senior etc railcards you can only use after 1000 or whatever time it is. We're special! The only thing is a minimum fare of £12 before 1000 Mon-Fri except July, August and bank holidays.

Try looking the fare up on a website (e.g. thetrainline or First Great Western) - for me it always shows the discounted fare.

If they tell you that again, you can report it to ATOC: http://www.hmforces-railcard.co.uk/what-is-the-hm-forces-railcard/savings-on-fares

Thanks for the info, it was only a £4 single journey about 3 stations down the line. There was a poster behind the ticket counter that did name HM Forces railcards. I'm doing the same trip on Friday, so will have a look at the small print !

    Cheers ....

If you Book a ticket online with the TRAIN LINE it asks you if you have a H M FORCES railcard and you get a discount from it. My son has just been given a Rail Warrant Travelled on the 04/06/2009 No problem at all.
The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.
