Rail Warrants

Other half tried to get a rail warrant the other day but was told they arent 'allowed' them anymore, is this across the services or just in OHs unit?

I know it went from 4 down to 3 but I cant believe they arent allowed any now?

Could someone please confirm this as I hope my OH as been given incorrect information.

I take it you meant the free ones. If so, you now get them for your first 3 years of service only and have done for a good few years.

Just told the other half that and he said 'probably sounds about right', asked has anyone told him that before, too which he replies 'I dont know'. What would he do without me, aye?

Thanks for the prompt reply, we can lay that to bed then lol

  • Rail Warrants have been 'discontinued' now and if the Unit has said they don't have any then this is correct.

All personnel are now expected to purchase a ticket and claim the money back via JPA or if it is for duty then I believe the travel cell can book an 'E-ticket'. If you are claiming the use of a Get You Home (Early Years) warrant then the authority request to use a warrant needs to be put onto JPA prior to the journey taking place, normally an ideal is at least 7 days before the date of journey.

Travel warrants have been discontinued for use on the National Rail network, and no longer acceptable for travel. However there are still some in issue out there and most holders of them will be able to travel (although not officially) as long as the guard is happy.

Obviously I have no experience of the services but only of the rail network.

This is wierd. I have never heard of this? I still issue them to the AMM's! They seem to be able to travel alright, I have had no complaints! Everyone on our RAF camp does.

Thanks, but I know that. The thread is saying that they have been discontinued and National Rail no longer accept them. Thats what I was unaware of.

Even the Forces Railcards (which used to be free) cost a bit now!

They went up to £2 a few years back, then £12 and I think they are currently £20.

Still worth it as 1 medium distance trip's saving can cover the initial outlay.

You can still get Leave Warrants as long as you are in the first 3 Years of service (4 per leave year). The old manual warrants which would be exchaged for a ticket have been phased out, but are still accepted.

The new tickets are booked online at the unit, the individual gets given a print off with the travel details and a reference number to exchange for travel.

You can as previously stated pay for your own ticket and claim it back on JPA.
