I would like to know how many 'click thru's' MSE received from this advert. At £6 per successful click, I think MSE should give a few thousand to charity from these proceeds

Why? They are a business just like any other, not a tax funded public service. I don't see the logic here, people should know how this site operates by now and if they did not do the research and find out they could use Quidco that's their loss. If MSE did not make some money from these deals they would not have the funds to operate and we wouldn't find out about any deals.

As for credibility, are you serious? MSE have brought us hundreds of good deals but they lose credibility because a couple went wrong? Major overreaction me thinks. And the worst you can say about this deal is that it did not go quite as smoothly as it should for a small amount of people.

Martin Lewis was very quick to criticise Carol Vordeman 1/2 years ago over the loans she was promoting in adverts (in fact this is probably an understatement, I seem to remember it was more a crusade against her).

Now we have a situation where Martin himself has promoted a questionable deal and comes on here to defend himself.

I had Martin down as clever.

It turns out it looks like I am wrong or he needs to sack his PR person.

At £6 per successful click, I think MSE should give a few thousand to charity from these proceeds, not to the researchers (who didn't research this website's history). Martin you are losing credibility from these posts, first Ice-save and now this, and your very quick to distance yourself from these posts after you have advertised them.

    Hi,

I just wanted to clear a few things up on this deal

    • Firstly, multiple members of the team, including but far from exclusively Martin, have been reading and responding on the forum every working day since this was featured in the email, not to count the hours spent emailing and phoning MyCityDeals and Sunglasses-Shop to ensure a working solution for this, which I believe we now have. To be told that we have distanced ourseves from this, along with some other pretty offensive comments on the forum over the past week, is a pretty bitter and grossly unfair pill for all of the team here to swallow.

    • Secondly, assuming that our commercial team can get the same payments as refer-a-friend or sign up deals (ie. the £6 you are referring to from MCD) with sites like this would lead you to an answer that is far off the mark. However, as has been reiterated multiple times in the past week, no deal is ever chosen for the weekly email, or on-site articles, or anything else we write, based on whether we receive an affiliate payment.

Further than this, as the site's web editor, who has worked at MSE for five years, I have never been made aware of ANY details of ANY affiliate deal. With regard to the £6 payment mentioned, our marketing director simply told me what I have posted in the bullet above. This is because it simply does not come into consideration AT ALL. As ever, all details on this can be found here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/funding

    • Thirdly, assuming we mention deals, products or services just because they pay us money is frankly absurd when put up against the evidence to the contrary. For example, it is widely known that paid links to Life Insurance brokers can return £100 per customer. However, if you check out our article (http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/level-term-insurance), we don't link to any paid-for comparison services, as we firmly believe that they are not the best things for our readers. Instead, the much smaller sites that cannot afford to pay out commission get you guys cheaper policies, so we link to them.

Now of course, we would love to get paid for everything we recommend, as that way the site gets more money, and we have said this in the past. Yet when the absolute best thing for the customer is a way that doesn't pay, we strictly say 'so be it', and tell all the details of the non-paying service with the same gusto. This pattern is repeated far and wide across the website.

I placed an MCD order and paid for it, got my code, entered it then choose my sunglasses, (making sure they were in stock), paid for them, got an order number, then I received a call from the fraud department of my credit card company.
They were querying the MCD purchase as it originated from Berlin, I OK'd the transaction and a few days later........received an email saying the sunglasses were now out of stock.

This whole affair stinks to high-heaven and MSE is now tainted with the unpleasant after-taste of a scam.

    Poor show Martin...poor show! :(

    Hi Chris_M,

We are doing everything we can to help all people who used this deal. In your case, you can get a refund of the £17.50 by emailing MCD on

  • I have a slightly difference question on all this...

I purchased a MCD £17.50 voucher and at the time looked through the deals on sunglasses-shop.co.uk. Later that day when I returned to order them the site was down (due to the traffic I assume!).

I have only just got around to reviewing the glasses and I am convinced that they have gone up in price but I cannot remember the original price.

Does anyone have the original prices - or a cached version of the site. Failing that, a price for the following pair of glasses:

Oakley Half Jacket Matte Black Array - 03-628 £97.75

    Many thanks.

Looking at Google's cache pages, it appears that they were £97.75 but went up to £103.95. They currently sit at £97.75

It's difficult to find any more info though because the page was only cached yesterday.

These members may be able to help. They saved a lot of the cached images.

I ordered on day 1 & still haven't got my sunglasses.

On 25th May I received an e-mail about the delay & asking if I wanted to cancel, I said yes, cancel.
I heard nothing until 27th then got this:

    Hi Stephen,
    Thanks for your email.
This order is ready to ship, did you still want to go ahead and cancel?

    Kind Regards,

    Jamie@SunglassesShop

I said OK, but send them Saturday so I'll be in to sign for them - I didn't know they'd need signing for until after I'd ordered.

    Got this response:
    Hi Stephen,
Yes indeed they will arrive with you Saturday.

    Kind Regards,

    Jamie - SunglassesShop

Waited in all day, checked the UPS tracking number they gave in a separate e-mail & noticed they were sent by Standard UPS, UPS say they only deliver Monday to Friday on Standard Service - not at all happy with the way this deal has gone, really cross with Sunglasses Shop & My City Deal.

No signature was required for mine, UPS just put them through the letter box.
