Herbs & fruit busehes from Wilko's

Hi! Just thought I would share this with you... I went to Wilkinsons the other day and bought a redcurrent and blackcurrent bush for just £1 each, they had quite a few shoots on and look in quite good condition.

Also bought four herb plants (Sage) for £1.50. They are only plug plants but packed in water retaining stuff and I'm sure in the 2-3 days since I potted them up they have doubled in size!! Seem really good for the money! I only bought Sage cos I read somewhere ants don't like it!!

I was just quite impressed with the quality in Wilko's for the money - time will tell if it was really worth it!!

  • I love going to Wilkinsons -they have almost everything you need for the garden!

I bought a lemon tree, roses, and a hibiscus plant from there a few years ago and they are fine. Plus, I always buy all my seed growing equipment from there, and this year I also bought organic plant food and big bags to grow my vegetables in.

Their range keeps getting larger every year it seems, and while there are some things that I would specifically buy at a garden centre, Wilkinsons are absolutely great for saving money on gardening essentials-and even a few non-essentials too! ;) I've even had success with plants bought in pound shops actually. Given a bit of time, even the dry and tired-looking ones usually come to life!

    Go Wilko! :T

i find wilkinsons to be reminiscent of old fashioned stores, no nonsense, simple layout, reasonable to good quality and great prices. even their rubbish batteriess are good value because you get loads of them for 3 quid!

I check wilkos regularly and picked up some thyme like mrssarah for 50p in the remainders. What gets me about them and Lidl however is that they are so bad at looking after their plants. They must kill half their stock.

The fruit bushes I saw yesterday had loads of shoots but they were very pale and tender growth that will not recover this season, so the plants are ruined. They need to keep them somewhere cool and light.

All their veg is 1/2 price I bought carrots, courgettes, peppers, all in a box, you just unpack it and plant them all the stuff is there for you, I also got strawberries and plug and go hanging basket plants all 1/2 price, they had potatoes and beetroot also and spring onions but never got it all as the garden is not that big and wanted to see if they grow first!:D

I agree! Especially true of bulbs.

Unless you buy the plants as soon as they hit the shelves it isn't worth the money. I too brought a red current bush for £1 a few weeks ago and it is very happy in the garden. Rhubarb has yet to decide if it likes the garden
    Nice to save.

OMG now I have to go back to wilkinsons tomorrow too to see if they have any rhubarb plants! Anyone know if it would grow ok in a pot? Or maybe I could stick it in my front bit which doesn't get much sun?

I can't believe what I saw in Wilkinsons the other day, they had these huge carrot/beetroot "kits" for sale........... £7.50! ish
Just a big box with compost and seeds in it. Absolutely outrageous.

The fruit bushes can be good value, but you have to pick through them all and get a good one. Half of the ones I look at are dead and most of the other ones are in trouble.
