I have some corrosion on the pipe behind the back box and it is blowing. The car is a good reliable banger and I am running it into the ground. Rather than replace the exhuast I have seen a £15 repair kit in halfords which should do the job for me- Does anyone have any experience of using these kits and to what result?

If it's a case of spending £15 on a repair kit, I'd rather call up a few places asking for a quote. If you're near Leeds try calling Exhaust Discounts. They seem to be cheaper than everywhere else for me.

I've not tried these kits, but had great success with a baked bean tin cut down the side, wrapped round and attached with a couple of jubilee clips. This repair outlasted the car, and got through two MOT's. Only works on straight pipes though.

A new back box is only around £50, ( pattern ) hardly worth the hassle of bodging it.

If you can do you own repair, you can put a new box on. I've used the paste and it falls out after a while.
You can buy the back box for about twice the price of the paste.

well I've just used a tube of gun gum on the pipe and am leaving it to dry to see what success I may or may have. If it fails then off to kwik fit !

I spent a small fortune on all those gum compounds and wrapping strips of tinfoil around exhaust pipes in my younger days.

It will last for a little while (enough to get through an MOT) but it will fall out eventually.
