Quarteira is right next to Vilamoura - 10-15 minutes walk, or a short cab ride. There are some excellent restaurants in the old town.

I've decided to go for Quarteira. I've booked a really fantastic apartment at the end of the beach on the sea front. We don't mind quiet and we usually like to hop on and off buses each day so I'll probably plan trips to Faro, Albufeira, walks along to Vilamoura a couple of times etc
