What worries me is that if the debt the government has got us into isn't enough then when we take into consideration the loss of taxation from previously working people and the increase in state benefits given to them I wonder if we as a country wont be bankrupt soon.

We will get through it as we always will and do. It does not hurt for us to step back and realise what we have around us. Family, Health, Happiness and Love is far more important than money even though we need it.

"The numbers of persons on the registers of the Employment Exchanges in this country were 2,762,219 at 31st August, 1931, and 2,741,306 at 23rd May, 1932."

Between August 1931 and May 1932, unemployment actually declined a bit. Does anyone have a graph showing the British unemployment figures for the 1930s?

This period of time is no way anywhere near as bad as in the 30s and also 80s

Of course there has been a huge change in the UK population make up since the 30's ! Millions died and were killed in the Second World War.
More importantly there has been a huge emigration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and also...yes to France, Portugal and Spain especially the Costas where many millions have retired to spend their final years.
Set off against this is the huge immigration from the Indian Subcontinent (and the West Indies ).
Nevertheless the figures quoted clearly show in my view the grave seriousness of the current and projected unemployment situation.

Never heard of the BABY BOOM :D

Unemployment has already been over 3 million (in 1986)

What else has changed since 1930?

Life Expectancy is up from 60 to 80 years
Infant mortality is down from 70/1000 to about 5/1000

in the 1876 report of the Registrar General, 16% of men and 22% of women could not sign their name in the register
in 1999, approx 100,000 school leavers (16%) leave school every year unable to read, write and spell adequately for the demands of daily life

Prison population up from 10,000 to 70,000+
Police force up from 60,000 to 120,000

Everyone wore a flat cap, had a moustach, walked extremely fast, and it was all in black and white !!!

The reason for the reported drop in registered unemployment between August 1931 and May 1932 almost certainly a direct result of the momentous decision of September 20, 1931 ...to drop the Gold Standard .
