Domain name registration headache!!

Bought 2 domain names from Fasthosts on 23rd Feb - just the domains, no hosting or any other extras..just the domains. One of the domains I'm going to use with another website at a later date and the other domain I'd intended hosting on my own ISP webspace.
I've configured the DNS through UK Reg (which seems linked with Fasthosts somehow) to direct it at my ISP - fine or so I thought.
I then go into my ISP domain settings and it says "awaiting transfer request from registrar" and when I try to transfer in my domain name I get another message "You can't transfer this domain inwards until your current domain host changes the IPS tag to FORCE9" grrrrrrr !!!!!!? I haven't hosted it anywhere!!!
I just seem to be going round in circles. Then I go back to the UK Reg website to try and change the IPS Tag to "Force9" (my ISP is plusnet) only to be told I can't change the domain's IPS tag for 40 days!!!
Why is this just so unbelievably, unnecessarily complicated??? I've tried numerous support emails and got nowhere! It seems this ridiculous 40 day rule is something to do with Nominet "law"..if I'd known this to begin with I wouldn't have bothered at all.

What domains did you get?
If they were anything besides .uk I would have used a more popular domain registrar like GoDaddy.0 -
They are both .co.uk domains.
The cynic in me is thinking I wouldn't have had any problems at all if I'd have hosted (more money for them!) with Fasthosts! and they're just being unreasonably awkward because I have my own webspace!0 -
I've had most of my domains with UKreg (which is Fasthosts' domain registration service) for a couple of years now. I also host a couple of websites with Fasthosts, but have some elsewhere too.
The whole domain names thing can be a bit complicated at first but, once you're used to it all, it kinda makes sense
First things first: I'd suggest you don't need to transfer your domain name away from Fasthosts/UKreg. If you want to use it with Force9 all you need to do is ask them for their nameservers. Then, go into your UKreg control panel and set your domain's nameservers to those given to your by Force9. Withn 72 hours, usually much quicker, everything should be up and running.
If you really do want to transfer your domain from UKreg to Force9, you can still do it. I once asked them about the 60 day transfer restriction and it's simply a fraud-saving measure. Apparently, spammers usesd to register lots of domains with stolen credit cards, then transfer them away before Fasthosts finds out that the card was dodgy. All you have to do is write to Fasthosts, by post or fax, and request the change. Bit of a pain in the neck, I know, but it's completely possible. I seem to remember they asked for letter-headed paper when I asked about.
I've stuck with UKreg for almost all my domains simply because they're cheap but they also give you a good service. I tried registering domains with 1&1 once but they took 12 hours to register them! I've always been surprised at how UKreg gets them registered instantly. Also, not many domain registration places let you ring them 24/7 for help. They're pretty good on the phones but it is an 0870 number
Anyway, hope you get it sorted mate.0 -
Thanks for this. I've got 2 websites that I have to "look after", but the domains are registered at UKreg and the hosting is elsewhere so I always get confused when trying to configure some domains in a foreign control panel (I don't use Fasthosts for domain registration)dogsrule wrote:I've had most of my domains with UKreg (which is Fasthosts' domain registration service) for a couple of years now. I buy my .co.uk domains on 1&1 and then contact my hosts at https://www.topclasshot.com and give them my 1&1 account details and theymove the domain name over for me and it usually takes about 24 hours 48 at the most
