PS3 - Backwards compatible?

Hi folks, I took delivery of a 80GB PS3 today:j:j:j and was wondering if it's backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games?

Also, if I can play the earlier games, is there a way of transferring my memory card data too?

I've been googling around trying to get an answer but can't find anything definitive.

Thanks in advance:T

Afraid not. The original 60Gb ones are the only ones that can

As above, they did it so they could sell the games on the playstation network.

Ah I see, so the cheeky beggars expect me to pay again for older games:naughty: oh well, might just plug PS2 back into TV and it can sit along side PS3:confused:

Well it was really as they needed to cut costs so by completely removing the ps2 architcecture from the 60Gb model then it freed it up to lower the price a little (The whole of a PS2 is inside of a 60Gb model)

Of course it did also help them to then give downloadable content but you cant really knock them for trying to lower the price in the 1st place

They also removed its ability to play SACDs, which blows.

i'm sure you can play ps1 games on any ps3 (40gb,60gb,80gb 160gb etc) as sony only removed the ps2 graphics chip from the later ps3s

I believe Ps1 is still there as its software emulation, the PS2 used hardware which has been removed.

I love my SACDs. If the PS3 played them, it would really persuade me to hurry up and buy one. Sony though, after having dangled SACD in front of me like some beautiful sounding carrot, has pretty much decided to dump the format, thanks in no small part to their total inability to market it. How they managed to screw up a high-def format that is also backwards compatible is beyond me. I also have a big stack of minidiscs here (thanks again Sony).

I think this video adequately sums up my feelings (unless you work with Billy Connolly, contains NSFW language).

They switched to software emulation for the PS2 as well. It wouldn't surprise me if the PS1 emulation vanished at some point in the future too.

The PS3 has got worse, hardware-wise, since it was released, while the XBox 360 has got better. Though, the latter did have something of a rocky start in some respects (heating up so much it burned a hole through the floor like that scene from Alien), so getting better wasn't exactly difficult.
