I have recently purchased some of the vanish white powder and I soaked my bf's white calvin kleins in it at the weekend and they are now sparkling...its not cheap at 4 pound for a tub but you only use one scoop and soak for 30 minutes...you can also add a scoop to your wash and that works well too.

I agree, it's expensive but you don't need much of it (less than the directions say you need, that's for sure!) and it really is good. I quite often have *cough* biological stains on my work clothes and some Vanish in with the washing powder works a treat. Sparkly whites and no stains to be seen.

Seeing that this is OS, anybody seen that 'bag of blue' that used to be sold? Looked like a chunk of deep blue chalk in a muslin bag, and supposedly gave your white that 'blue whiteness'.

Not the answer to the OP's question BUT

prevention is better than cure. Can you save up your white clothes for a pure white wash? I have managed to do this and have had white bra's for 3 or 4 yrs now. They are washed on the coolest wash. The elastic is just going now so I am due some more bra's

I remember that. I used to wash my grey horse's tail in it!! (Brought it up lovely.) The last time I saw that product it had been bottled in liquid form.
    I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.
  • Vanish Oxy powder (maybe not the latest version, but still useful) can be bought in Poundland, and in Farmfoods for 85p.

There'a an old fashioned 'apothecary' shoppe near to where I work, they sell carbolic soap and Zambuk ointment, that kind of thing. It's for tourists really. But I'm sure they sell Dolly Blue. Of course, it doesn't really make things any whiter, it's just an optical illusion.

I've been doing this for years and it definitely works.

If you use bleach on garments which are not 100% cotton they will turn yellowish. Having said that, I have used tiny bits of bleach gradually with a toothbrush to get nasty stains from white clothes (spag bol one of the worst). Would recommend one of the net curtain whitener or similar.
