My mum tells me that you can't make white bras white again without dying/ bleaching them, so I suspect the product probably involved bleach of some description. Apparently the reason they go grey is because grey is their natural colour and they are only dyed white, the dye fades gradually in the wash. Best way to avoid it is to wash them on the cold cycle- they retain their colour much longer.

I've had this problem and I don't know how to get them white again, I would have thought bleach would affect the elsticity in some way.

However, I did buy a stain preventer from Lakeland. It's like a washcloth and if you put it in with the washing it takes up any stray dye that leaches out of clothing. Even using it just on whites/pale colours it's turned an alrming shade of grey mauve and my bras do seem to be staying whiter.

I suppose it's not exactly OS, but I've recently bought some stuff made by Dylon called "Super White Lingerie". It's claimed to "whiten and revitalise white underwear". Haven't got around to trying it yet though. You stir it into a bowl of hot water and leave the yellowed/greyed items to soak for 30 mins, and you have to stir it occasionally and make sure the bras or whatever are fully submerged. Then you rinse them thoroughly and wash them in the usual way. Will try it tomorrow if it's another fine day!

Okay. I've now tried the "Super White lingerie". It's not at all bad - a couple of the bras haven't come out quite as pristine as i'd hoped, but they were my oldest ones, I think they are over 3 years old, so I shouldn't expect miracles! On the whole I recommend it! It does have quite a strong smell - I could still smell it on the bras even after rinsing them thoroughly and washing them - so I'm hoping a good blow on the line will get rid of it.

I heard somewhere that denture cleaning tablets are meant to work on these, if anyone has falsies and can try it and give their verdict I'd love to know.

I haven't tried this one but I was told that a few sterlising tablets in with your soap powder brings whites up well
  • Thanks everyone for all your tips. I will try some of these out. I like the denture cleaning tablets idea! Who would have thought it! Thanks again!

Just reporting back re above - a blow on the line DID get rid of the lingering smell!

years ago I used to volunteer in a fair trade charity shop and they sold the whole range of Ecover cleaning products. They had a whitening product which was fantastic, and I would imagine being Ecover that it was bleach free....the only problem is that I can't remember what it was called, I have no idea if they still make it, and I have no idea where you could buy it if they did......so overall I'm not much help really!
