Easyjet Flight cancelled !

Hi all, I was supposed to fly out from Basel to Liverpool today but the flight was cancelled due to snow. Has any one had experiences of cancelled flights before with Easyjet ? If so what did you manage to get in compensation terms as I also have car hire costs

I would ideally like a transfer for next week but do you think is possible in place of a refund ?

You will be offered either a full refund or transfer onto the same flight departing another day.
Easyjet are not responsible for any incidental charges you have incurred as the delay was not of their making.
The T&C's will confirm this. That's the way it is with the lo-co airlrlines I'm afraid.

    Not entirely true ...

    http://www.easyjet.com/en/book/regulations.html#delays

My sister flew from Newcastle to Berlin at the weekend ... the return flight last night to Newcastle was cancelled, and the next flight was not for 48 hours. I suggested that she re-route to Luton ( which is an hour from me ), and get the train back and claim it back.

Her Lloyds TSB insurance ( which comes with Platinum current account ) was next to useless ... she was told a cancellation wasn't covered and it would be treated like a delay ( which is odd considering that she would have been covered if she'd missed the flight cos of a bus breakdown or similar ), so she tried easyjet instead. She was told by the easyjet customer service advisor, that international law stated that easyjet was responible for getting her back to her correct destination. She was told to purchase her train ticket and then submit a claim to easyjet where she would get a full refund ...

Looking at the above regulations, if she had decided to wait for the alternative Newcastle flight, Easyjet would have paid her extra 2 nights hotel accomodation... which is the exact opposite what the easyjet employees in Berlin told everyone on the cancelled flight. Everyone was told they'd have to book hotels at their own expense and claim back from their travel insurance ... the easyjet employees working at Berlin were obviously talking out of their backsides !!

What's not entirely true ? The regulations clearly state the two options I mentioned :-

    You will be entitled to:

    1. Re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity; or

    2. A refund of the fare paid for the journey not made and for the journey already made where the flight no longer serves the purpose of the original travel plan. This refund can be claimed by visiting our website (https://www.easyJet.com) and completing the online cancelled flight form in the contact us section. Additionally, where relevant, we will offer a return flight to the first point of departure at the earliest available time.

And that is exactly what they provide.

But you can also claim compensation....( which is not mentioned explicitly in the T&Cs )

    1. My sister was re-routed to an alternative destination otherwise she'd have had to wait 48 hours for the next flight to her home destination.
    2. She is not claiming a refund cos the flights were dirt cheap anyway.

She has been told ( by EasyJet ) she can claim compensation for the additional costs incurred in getting back to Newcastle via Train from Luton, as described in this recent article.

So ... I stand by my original statement

is not true ..... the flight was cancelled because of the weather conditions ( so they said ), and therefore not of their making.

Your sisters case is entirely different to the OP. The airline transferred the passenger onto another flight returning to the ticketed destination, therfore fulfilled their obligations and responsibilties to the passenger. He is not entitled to further redress as the airline fulfilled it's duties under the Warsaw Convention.

Therefore my comments were fully accurate in the OP's case.

Your sisters case is entirely a different matter because she was not returned to the ticketed destination. The Warsaw conventions states that passengers should be returned to the ticketed point. It DOES NOT have to be by air carraige, but any form of transportation.

As per usual with journalism today, the full facts have not been reported in the Telegraph. What the article clearly fails to state is that the European legislation concerning delayed or cancelled flights does NOT include claims where the circumstances were beyond the control of the airline nor does it include claims where the passenger has been offered and accepted an alternative.
The Telegraph article refers to a flight delayed because of technical problems with the aircraft concerned and not a weather related issue.

I flew to France with Easyjet last May.

    1. We were checked in to leave at 17.30 hours on a Monday to Friday trip.
    2. Whilst waiting at the gate we were told to return to check-in.
    3. We were told that there was no aircraft due to strike action by French air traffic controllers, and that no aircraft had taken off or landed in France since midnight. It was a 24 hour strike.
    4. Our baggage was dumped in the airport check-in area
    5. We were told that we could fly out on Wednesday at 17.30. As we were returning on Friday we declined. They told us we could traipse from Liverpool to Luton and depart early the following morning, but would have to pay the going rate for the flight.
    6. No food or phone calls were offered nor was anything else, other than a refund.
    7. We went home and booked flights from Manchester the following moring. That cost £200.

There were several things that Easyjet ought to have done in order to satisfy their own policies. But they did nothing.

    8. I wrote to Easyjet and insisted that they pay the £200. They said no. I wrote again and told them that as they hadn't followed their own procedures that I would issue a claim in the County Court if they didn't cough up.

They did cough up, but, had they followed their procedure properly they needn't have paid out anything.

Well done Steve. I'm sure the rest of the UK population will thank you, and others like you, when yet more low-cost airlines collapse because the 'compo clan' came knocking!

You were offered a full refund which was the limit of their responsibility. Perhaps you think the French ATC strike was their fault? If you want a free hotel, pay an airline who can afford to give you frills.
