Distressed DD - stressed mum - help please

Hi all!!
After a bit of advice. My DD is 2 & 5 months and has been showing many of the signs of being ready for potty training. So we started at the weekend. Have had a few successes:Tand a few minor accidents;). However, DD gets really upset & distressed when she feels she needs to wee/poo - she starts really crying and holding herself, but does say she needs the potty. She'll sit on it for a moment, maybe do a tiny drop of wee, then get up, crying, refusing to sit on it again.
I've offered her the option of going back to pull-ups/nappies, as I don't want her to get distressed and would rather leave it for now, but she doesn't want this - she wants to wear pants. Even if she does have a nappy on, and she feels she needs a wee, she does the same thing - getting upset, saying she needs the potty but doing very little, if anything.
She's been doing this every 5 minutes or so this morning and this evening, and I really don't know what to do. She went to nursery today and they did the same thing - she chose pants. She had a couple of successes, but also got very disressed with the feeling that she needs to wee/poo.
Any ideas - I don't want to pressure her, but I think she knows what to do, but is scared. I would just put her back in pull-ups for a while - but she doesn't seem to want this either!!

my son wouldnt use a potty at all ,we bought one of those seats that goes on the toilet and he took to that great ,we also bought him his own special toilet wipes (kandoo wipes) and tried to make it as fun as possible bit cheers and lots of clapping hands when he did even the smallest dribble .
they soon pick up on all the praise .
try not to stress yourself or her as she will pick up on that0 -
Thanks for the reply. We do also have a toilet seat thing - which she doesn't mind sitting on, but then the same thing happens - gets very upset and wants to get off before really doing anything! The praise thing does work well - she got 2 'stamps' from nursery today for weeing on the potty/toilet - and was very proud of showing them off. Nursery staff (who obviously do this all day every day - lucky them:eek:) seem to feel we should perservere and that she has the idea - but I don't like her getting so distressed.20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

I'm sure she will get over it soon, she sounds like a very independant young lady. Maybe she is putting pressure on herself as she so wants to wear pants, once she realises it's OK to wee and poo on the toilet and get's her confidence up the worry will stop. Sounds like your doing all the right things in the encouragement, and rewards etc... and hopefully be a shortlived phase.0

Absolutely!!!! She's very capable, speaks in full sentences, organises her 2 older brothers (and me & her Dad lol) and has to do everything herself! Having previously had boys (who would still let me do everything for them;)) - it's a bit of a change!20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

My mum said I was like this, I self potty trained at a very early age (14 months) and refused to have a nappy even at night from that day!! I had 2 accidents and my mum said I would act worried about them and talk about them for years- I can still remember waking up and having wet my bed at less than 2 years old, my parent's never made a fuss, it was all my own expectations! Your LO will more than likely get over it really soon. Once she gives herself confidence that she can make it to the toilet, and can do it, she will be fine, and as I said before your reassurance is all you can do at the minute I would have thought. Good luck with it. x0 -

If you use wipes, please don't flush them down the toilet - they can be a major source of blockages, as we found to our cost when our patio flooded with sewage.0

I'm sure she is fine ( I know how you feel re the independant young lady, my dd is 3& half) but if the upset and tiny amounts of wee are a new thing she could maybe have a wee infection so it might be worth seeing your gp. NHS linkBooo!!!0

I know....we've never flushed normal wipes but have used the special ones designed for flushing! Hope your patio is sorted now:eek:20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100

I'll bear it in mind if it continues - but it's only started since we started potty training on Saturday, so am not worried at the moment. Thanks x20p Saver Club #33 60p/£100
