Recording Phone Calls

Hiya,

We're after a phone which can record phone calls - had a nasty experience with being switched over to Onetel without my permission. Apparently I agreed in the phone call to switch, but this isn't the case because I would always use a cashback site to switch and anyway, Onetel deals are rubbish compared to other companies. Anyway, I'd like to record phone calls for my own purposes, just like companies do for "fact verification".

I've looked in Argos but not sure where else to look for one :o

Cheers! :D

    Have a look here:

Also, if you use call recording equipment you have a duty to advise both parties that recording is taking place.

I believe Maplin's also sell telephone to hi-fi/tape connectors for about £10. There might be a shop near you.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I wish I had known about these. I needed to record abusive calls from my ex a few years ago. I used a phone with a loud speaker and just placed a tape recorder near it. This worked ok.

If you dont want to buy special equipment and you can be more selective about the calls you want to record. Try:

    http://www.rectel.co.uk who charge 10p a minute via a 0871 number.

Be extremely careful if you decide to go ahead with this - the company that signed you up to onetel should have a recording of the call and should provide it to you at your request. Why bother paying for it yourself?

If it is a one-off incident why spend out this money if it doesn't happen again - is it worth the cost?

Then of course, you HAVE to inform the caller that the conversation is being recorded - even if you have called them and want to record it. This has to be one of the first things you say and it must be clearly said on the tape including the rationale of why you are recording the call.

I would highly recommend you DO NOT do this - I have recently landed several people in court for this after recording calls to senior executives in our company to try and catch them out. The thing that caught them was their ignorance and failing to inform them it was being recorded.
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A

Well you should be proud of yourself. If your executives were caught out then that is fact, they were wrong. There is no excuse for that. I suppose you're proud of what you've done?? Your execs are screwing people to up their share price and when someone tries to hit back they get someone like you in their face. It's like saying to a criminal "oh yeah, we know you murdered that bloke but the thing is we can't use CCTV evidence in court because you weren't informed of the camera's presence in the first place".

Onetel doesn't mention that calls are recorded unless you wait till the very very end of the message saying press this, etc.

I will tell incomings that their calls are being recorded. That way they will behave themselves. Maybe I don't need to invest in a recorder if I just use this tactic.

That's pretty irrelevent when you have to inform them by law. Which is why you are told via IVR's / announcements that calls may be recorded for training purposes etc.

It is not illegal in the UK to record a phone conversation for your own use and you don't have to tell the other party that you are recording the call.
