Battery size converters

I've seen 'battery converters' advertised on e-bay - apparently you just insert one AA battery into a converter (the size of a C battery) and it works as if it were actually a C battery. Sounds too good to be true, especially as I have a surfeit of rechargeable AA batteries!

Please does anyone know anything about these?

what you have got to remember is that even though these adapters allow you to use the AA batteries instead of a C battery they will not last as long as normal C batteries

Thank you - I'd assumed that was the case. Any idea how long they last in relation to a C-sized battery, or is that a daft question? Presumably they vary depending on the type of battery as well as the size?

Cheap trick for converting AA to C size .

A short peice of standard 15mm foam houshold pipe lagging around the AA battery works for C size as the batteries are the same length, you may have to trim a little off the width by trimming the split in the lagging !

Is this true? I'm no expert but surely for rechargeable batteries, the capacity, as measured by mAh, is the important factor rather than the physical size of the battery? For example, a 2000 mAh battery should last twice as long as a 1000 mAh battery under identical conditions. See this FAQ for more info.

If true, then the advantage of using AA batteries in C-converters rather the larger C-batteries is that AA's are about half the price and also have higher capacity. See my thread here (post #4) for the prices of rechargeable AAs and AA to C-converters at 7dayshop.

Kentish - you're right about capacities, but you can get C size up to 3,500 mAh and D size up to 8,000 mAh, think current (pun intended..) AAs are around 2,500 mAh (but are cheaper per unit).
