Hello all,

I currently own a very rare sought after sports hatchback which I love to bits, the problem is, it's costing over £100 a month to keep on the road, plus the fact it drinks fuel and is in the higher tax band, oh, and the high insurance costs!

This is causing me a huge headache having to spend every weekend working on it. Rather than it being a fun project (which most of this cars owners would have it for), it's work simply to keep the thing on the road so I can get to work. I can't say I enjoy it anymore.

I've bitten the bullet and decided to sell it and am looking for an alternative car.

I have £8,000 to spend, and learning from my mistakes, would rather not have another 11 year old french hatchback. I'm looking to buy a car as new as possible which has to be reliable, small, safe, and have great MPG (couldn't get much further away to my current car).

I've been looking at Toyota Aygos (£7600 new) and Ford Kas (£7995 for a 3 month old style+). There are certain things I do require, but mostly looks ;)

Can anyone offer any advice? I've ALWAYS been against buying new cars, but the stress the current car has caused and the amount of time spent working on it and worrying has made me think "it's worth spending an extra £50 a month to be happy".

I would be borrowing the money from my parents at 0% so none of this APR tosh to consider. The one thing I struggle to work out is it's depreciation, though according to what car, the KA holds it's value by around 10% more.

I've done the following sums:

Monthly amounts (avg)
Old car
Road Tax 2.916666667
Car Insurance 33.33333333
Servicing 16.66666667
Petrol 90
Finance 150
Maintainence 0
MOT 0 0

Current Car
Description Monthly Annually
Road Tax 16.66666667
Car Insurance 54.16666667
Servicing 12.5
Petrol 130
Finance 0
Maintainence 100
MOT 3.333333333

Believe me, If I could keep my current car in the garage and have it as a 'project', I would be very very happy.

    HI,
I was looking at the Ka's and also Fiesta's. Considered Aygo as well.
On the end I got 58 reg, no mileage Suzuki Swift for £7.5k:-)) New car while getting some discount off the list price.
What kind of engine are you considering?
I tried the Fiesta 1.25 petrol and the engine cannot manage comfortably with the weight of the car.. And that is what I was also worried about with the Ka. Though I haven't tried one.
Toyota would have been my second choice - given cost/value (the Ford is good, but you cannot get such a discount on them yet as it's a very new model)

Haha somewhat helpful, though I actually find it quite appealing. Certainly more so than the aygo/c1/107.

I've heard of a company called broadspeed (not sure if I'm allowed to post names), but they seem a bit dodgey, offering silly discuonts on new cars, sounds great apart from you have to pay £299 which I'm avoiding. Is there any company similar to this, where you buy pre-reg?

The Swift looked appealing but turns out to be a little less MPG and servicing costs appeared to be more

The 1.2 engine should certainly cope better with the KA over the fiesta, due to the weight difference

You will certainly have to try one before you buy. The Ka has incredibly low hp so I was worried it will be sluggish. I was going to try one, but then found that pre-registered Suzuki and I tried one and that did it for me.

I went on Whatcar website, picked review on specific car, on right handside then picked "buy new" column and it came up listing companies and their prices... That is how I found the pre-registered Suzuki.

    See if it works...

By the way I have not heard of Broadspeed but that doesn't mean anything...
Have you tried googling it? Maybe find some review sites?
  • Depreciation is the biggest cost in motoring !!

To work out the cost of your depreciation if you go to the what car web site on there there is a tool that tells you how much in money your car will be worth in 1 year _ 2 year -3 year !!
By working out the difference you can work out how much your car has depreciated in that time say over 3 years.

To help with the deprecation try and get the best deal you can when you buy your new car !! have a look at car brokers who deal through main dealerships and see if your local dealer will match it

I have an Aygo Sport and its just great, real little buzz about car, great on fuel. The only drawback is that the boot is small, but luckily the back seats go down with just a pull of a chord. But even as it is i can get a week's shopping in it.

Personally, we will change it in about October but will never buy a brand new car again. You lose too much just driving it out of the showroom. next car will hopefully be a 9 month old Fiesta
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
