Hi thanks for responses.... I do have CIFAS on my account where someone tried to use my address to take out car finance...... would this be reason enough?

No, If a cifas marker has been placed on your credit files due to identity theft the Cifas marker is for your protection.

The only negative effect of the cifas marker is that you will not be able to obtain instant credit approval, any future lenders will seek extra assurance that the credit application is genuine.

I was declined because apparently information I'd given them was different from information already held about me. Which is weird, considering I've been accepted for god knows what else since then.

Worth bearing in mind that a CIFAS flag drops off your credit file automatically 13 months after it is put on there as long as the activity that gave rise to it being there has stopped. So it shouldn't trouble you for too long :)

Don't ignore a problem. Unlike a bad smell, it won't eventually go away.

    Not necessarily.

The lender could apply to have the CIFAS marker remain on their file for long than 13 months, if 'they' deem a fraud is still continuing.
