York - things to do/see

We are staying in York overnight on Tuesday and wondered what we should be seeing/doing while we are there. We have never visited York so it is all new to us. Just the two of us - husband and me. Kids are finally old enough to be left alone. We have accomodation, breakfast and evening meal sorted and we are travelling by car from Merseyside. Not really interested in shopping.
Thanks for any suggestions

I love york, though its years since I have been as I live on the west coast of wales and its quite a treck from here

I would say definately the York Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway museum.

Lots of nice (though expensive!) tea-rooms there, lovely just to walk around too!

A walk around the city walls is also good. The Shambles is nice, narrow and full of shops and expensive tea rooms.

Swerve the Jorvik unless you really have nothing to do. Long queues and expensive.

Cliffords Tower, Railway Museum (free!), river trip, Bettys tea rooms (expensive, but you have to treat yourself once in a while), if it's too pricy buy a cake to take out!

The Maltings pub is excellent if you are into real beers - it's not far from Railway Museum close to the river.

    Thanks,
we enjoy a good walk and love cake and beer (not together) so we should be happy. Staying at the Youth Hostel as Water End, Clifton. Are those things within walking distance?

Once you are in the centre of York everything is in walking distance - it's not a big place.

DH and I went to York for a weekend a few years ago and we loved it!!

We really enjoyed Jorvik, I dont remember having to queue for very long and that was on a Saturday. Inside the museum you sit in a sort of cable car thingy and it takes you through a street like what it would have been like in the times of the vikings, I love history so found it all fascinating.

The Minster is amazing and when we were there, a choir was performing while we were in the crypt, I have never heard anything like it, the sounds echoing down, the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end.

We went on the River Cruise at night, again really informative and interesting and you can relax and have a tea, coffee or something stronger if thats what you like :D

    Have a fab time

I would recommend the York Castle Museum. It's pretty big and very interesting.
