john lewis- stop me from spending our savings...

Options
ok our house is a mess -

and need to sort it out- visited John Lewis Sheffield and suprise suprise liked the look of

Monterey Furnitire line- sideboard/display and book cases - total £ 1400

and a Meile hoover ( wait for it )...£250 (( ok so i watched there promotional advert for the S7 series on the meile website and i believe its going to clean the house on its own and life will eb wonderful with it).

I tried to save money so far by
1. asking the john lewis lady- if we were to buy two big items and spend alot of money could we get a discount---she looked at me like I was scum and stated no " we treat all our customers the same no matter how much they spend ". (( i did read the haggling section- obvoiusly not so well)).

2.Considered opening a John Lewis card- points and vouchers- only gives me 15-20£ worth of voucher for £1400 ish. I would want to do better.

3. Looked other places- ie M&S and Laura Ash.- couldn't find a comparable.

Any more ideas ?

thanks

My one rule of thumb when shopping is that it can ALWAYS be bought cheaper elsewhere. Have you googled for an equivalent item on the furniture side? There is a few oak places on google. Might also be worth looking on Ebay.

How about getting a credit card with 0% interest on purchases - maybe the Virgin one is still going?

If you do this, lock the money away in a savings account while you are paying it off, and cut up the card after you have made the purchase.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

I bought a carpet from JL (when I was rich ;)) and they wouldn't budge on the price even though it was a whole house refit.

Some cashback sites such as pigsback.com offer points if you buy online - so you could buy online through one of those using your john lewis or 0% credit card to make a bit of extra money (pigsback are vouchers)

john lewis price match I think- so if a highstreet store sells the same things at a lower price, they should match it.

alternatively fall in love with retro/vintage and have a look on ebay :) we got an awesome and unique retro dining room set for £100, a similar but new set was over £1000 in a furniture store near us! (I'm not sure how this would work with the hoover)

Compare online prices which give you free delivery and before you commit, ask yourself the question: do I NEED it or just WANT it? Sleep on it before you commit. How much is it going to enhance your life if you have it? BTW found S7 series for £233 online just now????? Just don't rush into anything - really shop around online and don't talk yourself into something because you want it rather than have to have it!

defo get something off ebay or gumtree....save your money!!! I'd never spend 1400 on furniture when I know I could get it for a fraction of the cost second hand. I also pick up free stuff from freecycle :-)

Hope you manage to grab yourself a bargin.

I'm a bit of a Meile fan, and can recommend the TT5000 Cat and Dog Cylinder model.
As for John Lwis very nice but also nvery pricey (Remember the MPs John Lewis list)

My suggestion, with you being in Sheffield, Get up early on a weekday morning, preferably during term time, and head down the motorway to Nottingham, and go here.

hey, if you're in sheffield have you been to SWAG at darnall? They have a big warehouse of furniture from debenhams, DFS etc...lots of sofas and solid oak furniture at about 50-75% off and free next day delivery. We got some great sofas from there (£900 for leather recliners and huge) and a solid oak bookcase for £65. There's also a place up chesterfield road, next to the homebase up there. It's not as cheap but they have some nice solid wood stuff better then jonh lewis.

This company states....The finest quality oak furniture using only 100% seasoned hardwood timbers and made by skilled cabinetmakers. Why go to the likes of Next, Laura Ashley , John Lewis , Marks and Spencer , DFS, it's here at a fraction of the cost. Coffee tables, dining..

Have you tried going direct to http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Container-Clearance-Company
thats their ebay addy or theres http://www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/ and thats their non ebay site.

I can say that my relative did order from here and was pleased with the coffee table she ordered.

    Hope this helps .
