set up broadband when we move house without a time gap

We are hoping to move in approx one month. Have been researching broadband suppliers and talking to BT about getting our phone line moved. Because we are moving to a different area we cannot transfer our number and the lady in the house we are buying is keeping her number so we have to get a new telephone number, which they cannot guarantee until the day they we move and they connect us up... so...

Spoke to tiscali about signing up with them (we are currently with Metronet but I want to be on an unlimited useage package) and they cannot connect broadband for about 10-14 days after the new number is up and working. FIrstly does this sound right, will I find the same with all broadband providers?

Any ideas how I can get broadband set up quicker, we REALLY need to be online quick as we use it for work. Also I think i need to give metronet 30 days notice to leave.

    Hi VixxAnn,

You will probably get more replies on the Internet Access board, so I'll move your thread over there.

When we moved 2 months ago, we got Bulldog internet and phone line, broadband was working within 2-3 hrs after they have installed the line.

Would depend on the supplier i think, we ordered ours, but had to wait about a week or so for them to process before they came to install.

There was a new procedure set up for this kind of thing. I think it could be used both for those that are moving home, so their BT line & ADSL was activated on the same day - and also for those that just wanted to have a new BT line at a new address, and activate a new ADSL service on the same day.

Call BT asking for the new line, ask for a "Broadband Movers Order Code". This facilitates the simultaneous provision of both a BT line, and an ADSL service.

The code BT give you can then be given to your new ISP, so the ADSL is activated on the same day as your BT line.

IIRC, this can be done the opposite way too. ie, contact your choice of ISP first, placing an order & asking for the code above. You can then phone BT, placing an order for telephone line and you give them the code the ISP issued to you.

P.S. Just found the BT page that describes this:- Moving Home (Broadband Service)

    Hi
Tiscali DO NOT DO an unlimited usage package, check out their "Fair Usage Policy",
Check what their customers are saying about them, their not very happy.

Have a look at the following website, they compare broadband prices for you:

    Broadband packages
At the nifty list we do read the small print for you, so all prices include VAT and are calculated as a 12 months contract, taking into account one time fees such as setup and other small print / hidden charges.

Please be aware that the list on nifty is only a very small number of ISPs as those listed all pay an affiliate fee to nifty if you click through to the ISP from that list.

Far better to read the adslguide for unbiased opinions.

Just a guideline, as VixxAnn only really wanted to know if there is a provider that could have their broadband connected asap (and not take 2 wks after line is active) as they use it for work.

We had our Bulldog line installed and broadband (8mb, unlimited) active the same day as instllation (for which we paid £1)
total package = £30 phoneline and broadband

I would never hope for instant broadband in a new house. Instead, I suggest you get a good ol' dial up account with Tiscali and use their Web Accelerator for a broadband-ish performance for the days till your broadband gets connected. This gives you more time to shop around & play the field so making a better price decision.

Also make a careful note of all the accounts & logins you have on your old broadband provider's email addresses and transfer them to Yahoo email or similar before you move.
