Quite ironic really that it was the council that prevented them from being closed down for many, many years (it's a privately owned council/police dog pound for anyone who doesn't know, not a charity/rescue as it would have people believe) when conditions were atrocious, yet they are the ones forcing closure now when, from what I've read elsewhere, there has apparently been much improvement. I don't know how much of that is true though as I haven't been anywhere near the place in the last 10 years.
It's not somewhere that I've ever visited, but I had heard many bad things about the place and I was keeping this in mind when I found the last couple of strays that I had picked up.
I'm still seething at the thought of all the poor dogs running around lost, straying, injured etc and no one to taken them in out of hours.

"Improvements", would that be the same type of
improvements they did at Living world In armley, Leeds?0 -
Councils only have an obligation to collect dogs during office hours Monday to Friday. The problem was that until last year the Police also picked up stray dogs and police stations would take them in but this obligation was taken away and there was nothing put in its place to deal with strays out of hours. There was also no extra funding for this.
Most councils will have a kennel which will take stray dogs at weekends but you may have to get a reference number from the out of hours emergency number. The RSPCA have no obligation to take in stray dogs at all. The police also do not take in strays. If you find a dog at the weekend or after 4pm it becomes your problem.
I wouldn't blame your council for this problem because its simply a case of reduction in money from the government and an obligation to keep council tax bills to the lowest increase possible while costs go up.
The best thing to do is keep the dog till Monday morning and then ring the Dog Warden to collect or call the out of hours number and explain you have found a dog and need to know what the procedure is for out of hours. I know both Kirklees and Calderdale have contracts with a kennel to take dogs in at the weekend.
By the way the secert when calling these people is to be careful what you tell them and put empahsis on certain bits. So if you call the police make a big deal that the dog is in the road and a danger to traffic as that makes it a police matter. If calling the council tell them you have the dog secured and need to drop it off at the kennels.0 -

An update - good news...
- the other dog that was hit by a car has been found, seen by a vet, and is now in the pound with his pal, which is great.
They are microchipped, but to someone who says she passed them on to someone else a year ago.
They have been offered several rescue places, and a potential offer of a home too, so they are definitely safe!:T
Well done Sally for taking the time to catch this girl, and for spending all of your Sunday last week getting her sorted! :A If you hadn't, who knows - she may well have been hit by a car too, and may not have escaped as lightly as her pal!
Both dogs are safe, and together - a great outcome.0 -
Oh thats good news ("chipped but sold a year ago ......." Hmm, how often have we heard that one).
Good luck little ones, hope you both have better lives from now on.0 -
yeah, I did wonder if she was actually the lady with the dogs who said she was the cleaner!!? who knows0

What brilliant news, it's wonderful to have a happy ending.
Thanks for all your help again too, FC, I hope both dogs find happy homes now.
