Weird txt messages?

For a number of months now i've been getting random msgs from a number, i get them at all hours, its just simple txts like " hi how are you x" "i need to lose weight x " "im bored how are you" e.c.t ...really short and no indication of who they are. there is no'one this could be as i don't hand out my number willy nilly, and no'one would just randomly send txt messages all the time like this. I have never responded back ,the first time i got one i didnt reply because i had no money on my phone, but because i keep getting them and they are just so random ive decided to never reply. I have a feeling its a company or something, waiting for a reply back so they can start bombarding me? i'm not sure i just find it very strange. i searched the number on whocallsme and it came up under 'suspicious numbers' but no'one had left a comment about it. so i got my OH to hide his number and call, a man picked up and said "ho!" ????? lol.. what? so my OH said 'is john there' and the bloke hung up straight away

has anybody else been getting anything like this? or any idea what these could be? or am i just being paranoid?
