UK cottage holiday

A couple of years ago we went to Cornwall for a cottage holiday and had a wonderful time apart from the traffic jams on almost every journey we made.
Can someone recommend a nice place to stay in the UK for a family holiday close to the beach relatively quiet though not remote?

https://www.dorsetcoastalcottages - excellent selection of cottages throughout Dorset, also reasonably priced.

Thanks for such a quick reply Lady E. I had been thinking of Devon or Dorset, can you recommend a particular area and does it get gridlocked in August like Cornwall.

Beautiful Pembrokeshire never gets gridlocked - tho' it IS rather remote!

As with most of the West Country expect delays in peak holiday times but it is worth it . We have stayed at a number of the cottages , our favourite location being near to Bridport. Our absolute fave cottage is the one at Seatown ,simply because it is tucked away and 5 mins walk from a gorgeous pub on the coastline ......beautiful . Personally I would avoid Weymouth simply because it does get jampacked with visitors and is a bit "kiss me quick" resort but that is just me LOL . For a really romantic stroll ,go to Lyme Regis of an evening and walk out the harbour wall , ooooh I am getting all goose bumps . Whatever you do enjoy . HTH x

Sorry Weymouth Man , no offence intended .

Weymouth is a good seaside resort and ideal for families , with lots of things to do also has the train station in the middle of town making it an accessible location for train travellers.

We stayed in Cornwall (Rock) with a company called 'rock holidays' and had a beautiful cottage that was ideal. Rock, Polzeath and Padstow are all very nice with lots of things to do. And the beaches are amazing! Can't comment on the traffic jams as we always go out of school holiday season! Bude is quite nice for families and has a lovely big beach and lots of things to do in the surrounding area.

Depending on where you live, Wittering and Rye are also lovely. West Wittering has a beautiful beach and there are campsites nearby if you like camping.

Your welcome, I agree with your point about not exactly the quietest place in main season, and getting there by road can be a bit long winded, perhaps for a quieter holiday others seaside resorts are more pleasing.

  • The North Norfolk coast around The Wash is also quite nice for holidays, and doesn't seem to get quite as busy as the South West. But I can definitely recommend West Dorset, it's beautiful, and I quite like Weymouth!
