I am a bit slow.

I am with bt and supposed to get upto 8Mb but I cannot get above 480Kb.
speedtest.net tells me
Average Download Speed 0.49 Mb/s
Average Upload Speed 0.37 Mb/s
bt tells me the line is good, I do not see how they can know without a physical check to my telegraph pole though.
Anyway, I have some pretty old wires and boxes in my house. Is there a way for me to check these, I understand that I am not allowed to mess with the boxes or change them though.
£100 pounds for bt to check things out.

You can do whatever you want with the wiring on your side of the master socket, it is your responsibility not BT's, you can get any electrical engineer to sort this out, it doesn't have to be BT. Suggest you test your linespeed by plugging into the test socket behind the master socket faceplate, see what speed this gives you. if it is better then you have a problem with your internal wiring, if it is not then the line is unable to support a higher speed. This could be for a number of reasons, including the distance from the exchange. What does the line checker on samknows.com suggest your line should be able to support? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Sam says
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support a 4.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
Standard ADSL RAG results
You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512kbps ADSL
You can receive 256kbps ADSL
You are approximately 2.20km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!
Last year, when I lived 1/2 mile away, using the same exchange I got 5Mb.
I may try fiddling with my wires.
Do not think I have a master socket. 2 wires come into a small box then 4 wires come out and into a box with a socket in it.
I'll have a go.

If there is no split faceplate master socket, that indicates that the wiring is at least 25 years old so it may well have deteriorated. If no master socket, use the first socket after the cable enters the house and retest. Also check all your ADSL filters, swap each one with a known good one and retest each time. Make sure all your active extensions have filters on them.
Remember that the straight line distance is not strictly relevant, it is the cable length that matters, and you may be much further from the exchange than 2.2km by this measure. However it does seem that you should be able to get a higher speed than 480bkbps. But before raising this with BT you need to eliminate any internal faults. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Well, thanks for the comments.
I think I will talk to BT and get them to bring a new wire into my house. That is what looks oldest.

They won't rewire just because you say it looks old. There needs to be a fault. That is why I suggested that you retest from the master socket first, otherwise if you call them out and no fault is found, or if the fault is your side of the BT termination box, you will be charged. No free lunch, and no free laptop
