Dead CPU or MOBO ???

In relation to a few posts where they have said the mobo will boot even with a faulty processor, this is not always the case. I've seen a few systems (some recently) where the power button is pressed and nothing happens. On these none have been a mobo problem but have been related to the processor failing....each system gave no beeps at all, the only thing which happened was on some the processor fan would spin slightly and then stop. When a new/test processor was fitted they fired up alright no probs.
Recently a mate bought a AMD 2700+ processor at a boot sale (was told it was alright) but found his computer couldn't be upgraded to accept it so he asked me to try it for him (have an AMD 2800+) put processor in and no activity at all (board would have recognised it) Put mine back in and it booted no probs.
Currently I've AMD Athlon 1800, Athlon 2600 and Athlon 2700 processors sitting around the house which were pulled because they were faulty and the computers they were pulled from work ok with new processors. The problem is, when you don't have a similar system to take items out to check for faults, but don't just write it off as a faulty mobo, it could be the processorWelcome, rogerramjet.

i take it that you swapped pc and monitor power leads to make sure they both worked?reseated cards and memory?without spares to swap you will never really be sure of the broken item untill you buy replacements.good luck.0

I have to agree with Rogerramjet here.
The OP said that the green light works on the power switch. The power LED is fed from the header on the mobo so something is working. It's a difficult one to diagnose though without a spare (known to be working) processor
EDIT: ok ignore that lol I'm now reading it as the led on the psu thats working :doh:
Having said that though none of the fans should spin until you press the power button on the front of the base unit0 -

You are aware it's a MicroATX motherboard? (ie smaller form, not the standard size)
You can never be 100% certain it is the motherboard unless you use a process of elimination, but in this case it does most likely seem to be the mobo.
All power runs via the motherboard. If the cpu is present, even if it is faulty you should get a response. Same with the graphics card, in fact I don't think that even has to be present to get a response or at least a sign of power."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Yeah that is the same form factor as the mobo currently in the system.
I removed the cpu yesterday and it was still the same (no beeps etc) so im gonna bite the bullet and just buy that mobo to see what happens. fingers crossed eh ??

I cant comment on the fact that some p.c's dont switch on with a dead CPU as I've never seen this for myself.

You can do a search on Ebay for a PCI diagnostic card.
Unplug everything (video, ram, soundcards, IDE cables etc..) from the board, stick the card into a PCI slot, power up and it runs through the motherboard start up process. There's a LCD screen which brings up a number code when the board fails to pass a certain stage. Read the code from the manual and it tells you where the problem is...ie. CPU, power0 -
Some mobos have them built in, like my Epox for example.
Edit** ONly had to read from it once, and it came up with error code 25 or something, so I looked in the diag code book and it came back with this:-
Code 25 - Reserved.
okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, that narrows it down
