Cancel Vodafone account I'm Unemployed

My Son has a Voadafone pay monthly Mobile phone account, he is unemployed and is also Moving to live in Japan next week He wants to cancel his account as he cannot afford to pay it also it will be too expensive to use in Japan. He has been told by Vodafone customer services that he must continue to pay £40 a month until August 2010. Can he cancel for either of the two reasons?

  • Unfortunately, in my opinion, there is a signed contract in place until 18 months, and therefore won't be able to get out of it. However, in the exceptional circumstances, they might allow him to buy out the rest of his contract at a good rate, but I've never seen this done before so I'm unsure. It's worth giving them another ring to ask.

I'm on O2 and find I never get what I want 1st time round. So I just keep ringing until I do! It might be the best strategy for Vodafone too.

Sadly the answer is no he cant cancel for either of those reasons, it is a contract after all.

Only other option is to pay the amount off that is outstanding in full and end the contract. Other than that he is bound to be im afraid.

I would imagine the short answer will be 'no' for both reasons

so he was unemployed, moving abroad, yet took out an 18/24 month contract in the last 6 months?
  • Just thought of something though. They might let him downgrade his contract so he is paying less per month.

This was my thought. I would hope it was a 24 month contract, because he would have had to take out the 18 month contract in February this year, which shows terrible forward planning. Then again if you commit to a 24 month contract for £40 a month you have to make sure you'll be using it too.

This is worth a shot. Ultimately you should ask about cutting some kind of deal in general with Vodafone, because if you don't ask you don't get. It's not likely in the slightest though. Your son signed up for an expensive long term contract, and he has to take responsibility for that decision.

  • Another option would be transferring it into someone elses name (someone who is in the UK and looking for a contract). I know a lot of T-Mobile customers do this in these type of situations...they transfer them into a family members name or even a friend.

what would be the worst that could happen if he just cancelled the direct debit, closed the bank account and then moved to Japan?

    When is he coming back?

Whilst leaving a debt behind, it may potentially be sold on to a debt collection agency and be recorded on credit files for 6 years....
