You can now. I pay my halifax mortgage every month via online banking from my halifax account. It works the same as when I pay any other bill.

My halifax online doesnt allow me to make payments on line, it advises the s/c or acc no is invalid, same message when trying to setup a s/o online, however i am taking the s/c and a/c from my online portfolio which shows my mortgage info correctly.

It is paid by monthly payment plan, maybe this makes a difference?

    Great thread!
I am considering overpayments on my Halifax mortgage - but they would be irregular amounts (as & when I have spare cash really). Sounds like in my case I would be better off just making my overpayments over the counter in the branch?
Or is it possible to make 'as & when' payments on-line?

Also will my overpayments be paid against capital or interest?

Lots of questions I know but seeing as there seems to be loads of HBOS staff on this thread I should be alright!

Whoops, pressed wrong button first & thanked you by mistake.

I make occasional overpayments on my Halifax mortgage & make my monthly payments by standing order instead of direct debit. This allows me to alter the monthly amount my bank will pay the Halifax during any month I wish to overpay.

I'm not sure about the capital or interest part, I've always just assumed it comes off the capital.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

i'm not sure about the online - as in the branch wer obviously do not use online ( i view all my accounts though using roll numbers instead, and mortgages start with an A/)
i would think you should be able to set up on a request basis a standing order
*over the counter - they should ask you whether your monthly payments are to change or not
  • If you ring them up they will give you the correct sort code and account no so you can set up your s/o or make extra payments. The account details in your portfolio is different as they need to do this to request d/d from customers

You'll need to set up a standing order. We have just looked into doing this, we were advised to make an appointment to set up the standing order. If you have borrowed additional amounts and added this to your mortgage (we did for a loft conversion)this sum will be paid off first.

We have a standing order....but it doesnt let you alter the amount online.
I have just phoned up today to increase my standing order in view of my payrise which is due next month and have to say it was the most straight forward it has ever been! In the past I have had to be put on hold etc...

Yes - you can easily set up ad-hoc payments on the Halifax system - I do that for Credit Cards. But you set it up as a 'bill payment' not a Standing Order, then it has neither date nor amount associated with it Then you just go to 'make a payment' (** see later edit) (it doesn't quite say that on the left hand selector bar - but its close!) - select from the drop down menu, add the amount , check it and hit Enter.
Later edit. ** Decided to look it up! Go into the account you will pay from. Select 'Transfer money / pay bills' on the left bar - then hit the button marked 'Create new transfer'. You give the bill payment you are creating a name (eg Halifax Mtge') - then select that from the drop down menu when you need it. Easier to use than describe!

Charlie - struggling to get my head round that. You can't mean via your Halifax online as it's unuseable until you get the password? Can you re-phrase it a bit?

It does if you have that account on your Portfolio. Amend my SO values regularly!
