Does anyone know where to get one of these cards on PAYG?

    Try your local Vodafone shop - I know for a while that they were only available on contract - this may have changed.

    Otherwise, you might be able to get hold of an old one after a contract has finsihed and put a PAYG SIM in.

    When I bought my new Acer laptop I got one of these Vodafone Data 3G cards for free with 20MB to start me off. Each subequent 1MB cost about £1.50, which I could pay for on a PAYG basis by direct debit each month.

    I only used it once in Cornwall when I was on holiday and I only used about 15MB of the freebie allocation and Vodafone tried to invoice me for the data I used, cheeky whatnots. I soon put them straight!

    I bought one off ebay. There are usually a few on there.

    Alternately use your mobile with a voda sim as a modem on GPRS over infrared, USB or bluetooth. I do this and find there's no need for a data card as they can be quite pricey. A bluetooth dongle for my laptop set me back a tenner.

    My mobile is on O2 unfortunately :(

    Have tried using it as a modem but with little success

    Thank you to everyone who's gone out of their way to post a reply - very much appreciated

    Surely getting it unlocked is cheaper than a data card ;)

    - I work for o2 tech support so any help you need setting up your mobile as a modem let me know and I'll get the settings (substituting for voda settings obviously!)

    I use an o2 samsung e720 as a bluetooth modem with a voda sim with ease. I use o2 for voice and voda for data when I'm travelling with laptop (much cheaper).

    I have an NEC N411i mobile on O2 (got it because you got a bluetooth headset and iPod shuffle free)

    When I use the NEC Connection tool it asks me for APN, username, password, and TCP/IP settings

    You can get this information from here http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html or here http://www.cctvsafe.com/support/phone_settings.htm

    APN = wap.o2.co.uk (contract) or payandgo.o2.co.uk (pay as you go)

    username = o2wap (contract) / payandgo (PAYG)

    password = password
