What is a home boarder? Is it someone that takes a pet into their family home? If so this would be so much better than a kennel. The kennel near me always has dogs barking so I know they are left alone in a cage for the majority of the day and night. I would never do this to my dog, he would think I had abandoned him, if I ever had to temporarily get someone to look after him I would find a different solution to a kennel.
Before we got a dog I actually offered to look after someone's dog for free for 2 weeks, to get a taste of ownership responsibilities, but they still put their dog in a kennel. I would have treated him as he deserved, in fact get what mine gets now, the best food (in correct healthy quantities), never/rarely leave him alone and 4 walks a day, all mainly off lead in the woods, although with a strange dog I would I suppose have to keep him on lead until I was sure he wouldn't run away.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

We charge £5, £8, £10/day or part day based on size of dog, excluding food.0 -
Interesting, as someone recently asked if I would be interested in doing this. I was thinking it would be money that I could pass directly to the rescue I am involved in but I did wonder if my own pooches would be able to adapt quickly to a change of bed mates?
The girl who does it also does grooming from home - does mine. I met her over the fields yesterday and she had 4 dogs with her. 1 bless was 16 years old and a bit senile - her family had gone away for a week and couldnt bear to leave her in kennels.0 -
We do it on a very part time basis, but know others who make quite a little business of it. Friend of ours normally has 4 to 6 dogs at home with her and they always get 2 walks a day in the local woods!
We managed to 'inherit' 2 dogs we used to look after so now have a base of 2 anyway and the visitors are extra paws to patter around. Our 2 adapted easily once they became the fixtures but then they were used to being looked after from time to time by another home minder, along with other dogs.0 -

I would live to do something like that but I just can't see how you could avoid ending up with a sort of a kennel situation? By that I mean if I had say 8 dogs in my care, I honestly do not think I could give all of them the individual attention they needed. Not to mention the worst of all that my own dog would I am certain be feel left out and no longer special. I would love someone to reply and tell me how this could work, because I really would do something like this if I thought it was possible to get the balance right.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
Well I guess you would regulate the number you had in your care wouldnt you.
Lola, how do you go for things like insurance and so on?0 -
£8.50 per day, including food, 1 walk a day guaranteed 2 if possible, 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night in the 'playpark'. Plus £2-£5 petplan kennel cover (this means if he has to see a vet while in kennel care I don't pay a penny, alos death benefit etc just in case, also covers 72 hours after he leaves the kennels and any disease that he may have picked up there).
They try for 2 walks but don't always manage it so they only guarantee 1. All dogs must come in with a full vacination record including kennel cough. They use vircon disenfectant and provide vet bedding. All the kennels are spotless. They are in a loveley area with woodland walks. The playpark is a large fenced area (larger than my garden) with lots of toys. They are put in here while kennels are cleaned, friendly dogs are allowed to go in socialise and play (with the owners consent) and are supervised. There is another smaller area for the ones who are not so sociable is the large one is full. I send along his cigar chews so he has one of these with him (he always has a stash at home).
As we are in the countryside more or less, this is the going rate about here. I just love my kennels as Odie is always well taken care of, it's close to one of our friends (so we know we do get what we pay for!), it is spotless and the couple who own it are lovely! We had one KC scare. Got a phonecall to say that one of their 'guest's' had went home with a cough and the vet was montering it. Got another to say that it was a false alarm, the dog had just barked himself hoarse! Odie comes out of it looking great (they also bath them ready for pick up) and doesn't appear in any way distressed. It's also nice that this morning when I called to book him in, they knew exactly who he was!
Always check the place out first.
Look a few to compare.
Ask where they walk the dogs and how often.
Do they let dogs socialise if they are compatible, do you agree with this?
Insurance, what happens if your dog needs a vet?
How often are the kennels cleaned?
Will they give him treats?
Do they groom them?0 -

We don't have more than +2 now we have 2 fixtures (except when we cover for one of my daughters who has 3 or 4). Also everyone tends to want holiday period: half terms; Easter; July & August etc and this limits what we can take on as regards dog minding. They are always from friends and personal referals so we don't have additional insurance cover. We don't charge relatives I would add!!0 -
Thanks for all your replies, I will be going round some kennels soon . I would like to see them before we put her there as some sounhds really nice with two walks, she would love that. Thanks for the cough vacination I didn`t know anything like that exsisted. She is not spade , I hope that will not be problem although she might be on heat that time as a small dog. £10 seems about average where I live. Believe it or not her holiday kennel will be more expensive that our holiday of 5 ( the sun holidays though)!0
