Text messaging the USA

Can anyone help with info on cheap ways to text a mobile in the US?

I'm a Virgin pay as you go customer and it works out at 25p a text - I'm sending up to six a day so it's getting pretty expensive.

Sending texts via a PC isn't really as a solution as if I'm on a computer then I will just email instead.

Sorry if this duplicates a previous thread - it's my first post and I couldn't find another one.

Cheers

Why not set your phone up to do POP3 email and get your friend to do the same? You'll only be charged for the minute amount of data used over GPRS to send the email- and usually PAYG customers have a free allowance anyway. That way you can send way more text for much less cash.
