I know what your both saying but most of what ccleaner does can be done without actually using it. I don't want to argue though as it makes it simpler for people to do these things if they don't know what they are messing with so will leave it at that. The main point is, as long as it doesn't run at startup, then why not use the software I guess!

stevem999 - just re-checked your HJT log, and saw this:-
C:\Program Files\Bioscrypt\VeriSoft\Bin\AsGHost.exe
if this is constantly running and backing up your hard drive, it will REALLY slow down your 'puter. Would be better turning it off and manually running it once a week-ish.........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I know it DID feel like the 'twilight zone' at one point

lawns - using CCleaner or spybot (or any number of other tools for that matter) to enable/disable registry keys is far safer than messing directly with your registry....and as you rightly point out, if used correctly, don't have to be running unless you are using them......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

guys, guys, as they say in these parts, calm down, calm down.
Feel like I'm caught in the crossfire!!!
Anyway, now I'm a little lost. I've now downloaded superantispyware and it's running as we speak. Nothing found in memory or registry and is now doing the file check. Found a couple of tracking cookies so far, but will update you when finished (guess it could be tomorrow).
I've fixed the two entries Rik suggested (what was so nasty about the second one??), but am left with the list of startup programs - should I use CC Cleaner for those? Looking at the list, there are a few I don't want to touch such as the HP Printer stuff (took aaageeessss to get it installed), and the Nokia PC Sync stuff too, but things like OD2 Music Manager (god knows what that is), Groove monitor (ditto), and Adobe Speed Launcher can go. Is this what I should use CC Cleaner for, because it allows me to put them back if my system doesn't like it? Or is this what Spybot was suggested for (I already have that).
As for C:\Program Files\Bioscrypt\VeriSoft\Bin\AsGHost.exe, I don't think it's a backup function as far as I can tell. I think verisoft is to do with the fingerprint scanner on my laptop, however asghost.exe seems to be a very generic term - any more ideas on this one?0 -
ccleaner and spybot will both do it (But as explained, ccleaner will also CLEAN your computer of some junk)
Either will put the startup entries back on if you wish to
You can switch off all those entries you mentioned
The LAUNCHER you removed is some sort of dodgy download manager
Jacks possibly right about the BACKUP program you have running too ~
C:\Program Files\Bioscrypt\VeriSoft\Bin\AsGHost.exe

These are definately not needed for the smooth running of the laptop:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
These may be relevant to the laptop specifically so keep them on:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QPService] "C:\Program Files\HP\QuickPlay\QPService.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QlbCtrl] %ProgramFiles%\Hewlett-Packard\HP Quick Launch Buttons\QlbCtrl.exe /Start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Health Check Scheduler] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Health Check\HPHC_Scheduler.exe
These I am not sure about:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaBarFileManager] C:\Program Files\On Demand Distribution\OD2 Music Manager\OD2MediaBar_VistaFileManager.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GrooveMonitor] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe"
Just for a test, try disabling these, as I am sure they don't need to be run at startup, for Nokia PC Suite to work. You simply start the program whenever you need it:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PC Suite Tray] "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 7\PCSuite.exe" -onlytray
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Nokia.PCSync] "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 7\PcSync2.exe" /NoDialog
Any others I haven't mentioned above, don't touch them...0 -

Mmmm, strange one this. Bioscrypt is the name of a manufacturer who makes the Verisoft software, which basically allows me to use a fingerprint scanner built into my laptop, but looking at all the software help there is no mention of a backup facility included in it. There is only one asghost process running at the moment according to Task Manager and that is a Global Virtual Card Host - mean any more?0
