If you try a private rented cottage, we stayed in one in the Lakes last year quite reasonable too...will try and find the name of it.
Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos

Have you tried phoning universities in a city you want to visit and asking if they let their hall blocks out during the hols? I now a few places do and they tend to be reasonable (if a bit spartan).

Edited to say : I stayed in a 2-bed apartment in a premier apartments block in Liverpool with work a few years back and it was beautiful - and significantly cheaper than two hotel rooms would have been.

Other groups also do work holidays - e.g. BTCV http://www2.btcv.org.uk/display/holidays

Compassion in World Farming might also be worth a look?

I know you said that you wanted to stay in the UK, but I went Gdansk in Poland last Sept. It is one of the most enjoyable breaks I've ever had. It's a beautiful city, lots to see like the museum next to the shipyard. Food and drink really really cheap and friendly people. I stayed in the Dom Muzica (sp?) hotel, it was cheap but very very nice.

I know they're not everyones cup of tea, but Ryanair fly there. You should go another time, if not this time (before the World Cup and all the prices go up!)

Thanks for all the suggestions :)
We've managed to get some cheap flights to Berlin for a long weekend late September (the weekend prior to go back to uni). We're staying with friends so don't have to worry about many costs.
Still haven't booked anywhere for July but hoping to hear back from a few places with regards to working holiday type things.

A couple of places were suggested by my university's volunteering society. They haven't been all that much use for us this year but if anyone else is interested, the links to companies are listed below.

    Thanks again :)

I'm doing one of these at the moment. Fortunately its a drug thats been on prescription before so have to take that and a new formulation of it, and they just see the side effects/the effect on blood levels. So its all safe.

Its paid on 'inconvenience' and the number of blood samples taken, not the risk. So the one I'm doing pays reasonably well as I have to stay there every weekend for 5 weeks and go every morning I'm not resident to take it.

Bit of a sacrifice avoiding alcohol and things, buts its pretty good if you can find decent ones.
