Urgent return flight needed from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

I wonder if anyone can help me? I've just received a phone call from my sister's boyfriend. My sister is seriously ill and needs to return from Dominican Republic (where she is in hospital) asap. Does anyone have any idea how I can find out how to get a flight sooner than the Thompson one they've managed to get for tomorrow?

Any help much appreciated

I'm afraid she has a pre-existing medical condition so I presume she has no insurance. I'm cross with her for going but she so needed a break. This is such bad luck

Where in the UK does she need to be?

What time is the arranged flight for tomorrow?

Is she actually fit to fly?

I doubt insurance would cover her for earlier flight if Thomson can fly her home tomorrow (unless the Thomson flight cannot accommodate her needs).

  • You could try checking the departures from the airport. This is the website http://www.aerodom.com/app/do/frontpage.aspx but it seems to be in Spanish (I think). From what I can tell there are no departures tonight so tomorrow looks like the soonest.

There is a flight for Heathrow with AA leaving today at 3.08pm (not sure what the time difference is), but it has two stops and it is £1000. Alternatively there is a BA flight with one change for £2087.

Goodness, yes, I never thought of that - the airline may not accept her.

The arranged flight is 16.40 tomorrow. She has been in touch with her consultant here and he says to travel if she feels well enough

The stress of a long-haul flight, together with regret for losing part of her holiday, are unlikely to help her. Consider whether she would be better receiving treatment there, and returning when she feels fit.

Puerto Plata is not too far from the capital (Santo Domingo) which has many flights to the UK. The buses serving that route are very comfortable, so that might open up other options for her.

Oh: she may have travel insurance, even if it is not valid for her pre-existing condition. The insurance company should be able to give advice, even if they don't pay for anything. If so, it is worth asking them.
