Good luck crockpot, i was going to suggest straining it if it does not turn out thick enough but ravylesley beat me to it :D i turn half the yogurt into soft cheese and add garlic granules and chopped chives from the garden. This is a favourite of ours on toast.
I don`t have any cheese making bits and bobs so i stand a funnel in a jug and i have a gents hanky that i boil for a few mins then wring out, this goes in the funnel which stands in the fridege. After about 36 hours i have lovely soft cheese. Just remember after it has been scraped into a tub to rinse that hanky straight away or it will be a pain to get out.

If it`s strained for a couple of hours the yogurt will be nice and thick.

  • I bought the electric maker on Monday and used it last night and I am SO PLEASED!

I used a tablespoon of Total full fat greek yogurt as my starter and put 500ml of full fat UHT milk in (I only had 500ml, will use 900ml next time). I left it for 12 hours because I overslept and this morning I had normal consistency (think Muller Light) yogurt.

I put the tub in the fridge and when I got home from work checked it again thinking it might have thickened up more from cooling down - it's now the consistency of greek yogurt! No straining, no added milk powder. I am really pleased with this.

    I have two questions though.
    1. Does using more starter make a thicker yogurt? Perhaps mine is thick because I used a whole tablespoon of starter to only 500ml of milk. In which case I will use double as much starter next time when I do a full tub.
    2. Do different starters make different tastes? Mine is very tangy and I would prefer it less tangy, so should I try a different starter yogurt next time?

littlemissaspie - it's probably tangy as it was left for longer than necessary. I didn't know you could use the total yoghurt as a starter, I have been thinking I couldn't get live yog in my local supermarket but they have total.

I was wondering whether anyone had tried the above combination, or has any ideas about it.

I am wondering whether to go for an electric yogurt maker or an easiyo one, but prefer the size of the electric yogurt maker.

I like the option of using sachets for a 'starter' as I can see myself being too disorganised/arriving late from work with empty fridge etc, to always have a fresh yogurt starter in the house.

I know the easiyo people proclaim you need the easiyo maker, but then you'd expect them to say that....

    Many thanks!

    Now I am on it...

How long can you keep the home made yogurt? As long as purchased yogurt?

Can you make smaller portions than 1 liter in these yogurt makers?

    Thanks!
