I'm a seller on Ebay - advice needed.

I have recently sold an item on Ebay. On the original listing I made it clear that I would only accept payment by Paypal. Since the auction closed the successful bidder has told me that they don't have a Paypal account, so I suggested payment by cheque, they told me this was not possible. They now want to pay the money directly into my bank account. There is absolutely no way I am going to give my bank account details to a stranger. What are my rights? Can I report the user to Ebay for failing to adhere to the terms set-out in the original listing?

I don't know about that but I'm sure someone more knowledgable will know.
Re the bank transfer - it's VERY safe you know, honestly. If you think about it - you give your bank details to complete strangers every time you write a cheque so it's no more risky than that. All they would need to do it is your name, account number and sort-code.
If you absolutely won't allow the buyer to do this what about a postal order? You can't control everything in life....... your hair was put on your head to remind you of that

I'd suggest a postal order too, although bank transfers are generally safe, I just don't trust them myself. How much did the item sell for out of curiosity? We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0

You don't even need to give them your name if i remember correctly. Bank Transfer is many a sellers dream as you don't have to pay any paypal fees, wait for the cheque to clear, and it can't bounce or be reversed.MFW - £79,349 outstanding Nov 2010
Target - £3000 by Dec 2011
Current OP - £0/£30000 -
Only an idiot refuses a bank transfer. They are a sellers dream.
Safe, fast and no chargeback.Terms & Conditions Apply0 -
as said..accept it. Account number and sort code are all on a chq,and im sure you have given many of those out,you even give them a sample of your signature with chq!
I thought everyone had to have a PP account when buying/selling on ebay? Can someone confirm that ?TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....0 -
absolutely grab the offer of a bank transfer.0

I would check the buyers feedback - if they look ok, then I would let them have the bank details. In reality there is very little risk of there being a problem with this, although I personally share your discomfort (I work for one, so tend to be a bit more precious about my account details).
You can set your preferences to only accept bids from buyers with a Paypal account.0 -
Thanks for the advice everyone.0
