Armed Forces Pay Rises

Just for discussion, but where do people stand on pay rises for the armed forces in the present climate?
The Minister for Defence is giving a statement in the Commons after Prayers at 1430 today with regards to the Armed Forces Pay Review Body reccomendations and it is expected to announce a 2.8% pay rise.
Obviously I'm biased because of my job but what do you all think as it is another public sector pay rise to be announced this month when the private sector are taking pay cuts?

I think the forces are a unique position. (simialrly to the the other unique position of medical professionals).
I would like to see them not just paid really well, but well prepared for when they leave the forces. It seems sometimes the latter is really lacking. Regardless of my view of this in general, I worry about the pressure on the pot.

As the rest of the country is expecting wage freezes and cuts, the award should be minimal.
In line with NHS/Police awards.0 -

Like you I'm biased so I won't make a comment.
But be warned
I have a very particular set of skills, skills that I have acquired over a very long career, skills that might be a nightmare for people like you!If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -
I don't begrudge them the money, I think they are underpaid, except the Admirals/Generals/Air Marshalls.
More importantly they are under resourced, either the defence budget should rise massively or we end combat operations abroad
Also BFG should come to an end, so that they spend their money here in the UK[strike]Debt @ LBM 04/07 £14,804[/strike]01/08 [strike]£10,472[/strike]now debt free:j
Target: Stay debt free0 -

They do already with a non contributory FSP awarded after 22yrs service. 40yrs old and having a 2nd income is not to be sniffed at.
The ranks actually do get paid fairly well aswell, Sgts on mid £30k with a non contributory pension, and if single cheap as chip living costs. Free dental, bonuses galore when they go away on tours, they are not as poorly paid as they are made out to be.0 -

I believe (but will go check) that we have always been the ones to get the lowest rise.....however we do get other perks that these guys probably don't get.If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I don't think they get paid enough, esp those on the front line risking life and limb, I don't know why they do it to be honest 'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

I'm not really thinking financially.
I'm thinking about a transition to life outside the army. Emotionally if you like, but practically too. It would seem however well remunerated you are if you cannot make an ''appropriate'' adaptation to ''civilian'' life then its going to be a life that doesn't reach its scope for fulfilment.

Considering the billions that Brown has been pouring into the pockets of his wretched hopeless bankers, you'd think there'd be a bit extra for squaddies.
Damn the man. Damn his eyes.0
