i have had my d500 unlocked from orange and have put in a o2 sim card the signal keeps dropping on it , i remember when i did the same a couple of years back with my panasonic gd87 that seemed to do the same signal keep dropping is this normal for a phone to be unlocked for the signal to keep coming off and on when another network sim has been put in,

i cant put up with it if i cant use my phone and people cant ring me with it fluctuating

Different phones are have better receptions than others. Logically, unlocking a phone shouldn't affect its signal.

Different networks have different strengths too - so maybe you can find a room in your house where the O2 one works better.

i think some of the d500s had problems if they had been unlocked by code rather than by clip
you could try flashing a newer s/w to it

the orange firmware doesn't work correctly with o2 sims, its a common problem.
