My son would like to connect his Xbox 360 to Xbox live. We have a wi fi connection in the house. What do we need to set this up ? Apparently there are different ways of doing this. I am being constantly badgered by him to sort this and I feel a bit useless. Can anyone help please ?

You can connect an ethernet cable from the Xbox to your router, or go the wireless route.
There are a few options to go wireless : buy the wireless adapter, a wireless hub, or use homeplugs.
You then need to pay for gold membership, currently around £30 for a years membership.Dave. :wave:0 -
Worth noting that unless there is a new package out, the wireless adaptor for the 360 is at an additional cost0

Everything I listed will be at an additional cost.
The Ethernet cable will be the cheapest option though.Dave. :wave:0 -

Thanks for this. We would be using the wireless option as the x box is some distance from the router. Which of the wireless options do you recommend and have you any idea of prices please ?0 -
there is only one wireless option and thats the official xbox360 wireless adapter £54.99 on amazon.co.uk0

ethernet is the cheapest an easyest to set up
goin wireless means you need an adaptor at 60 quid an you may need to change your router settings which can be quite difficult for someone who has never done that although there are alot of threads on what to do on the xbox forums0 -

Forgive me if this a stupid question but does using an ethernet cable mean the connection will have to go from downstairs where the router is to upstairs where the xbox is ?0 -
Yes it does, the cable has to run from your router to your xbox......
It is important to note that the 360 wireless connection is not as good as your PC. I had a nightmare with mine dropping service so I switched to ethernet. It really is the best option....0 -
go for ethernet. and use powerline adapters. i saw some the other day for £15 and then you need a 2 cable2 £1. plug in powerline adapter near router, plug in cable, plug in powerline next to Xbox, plug in cable.... sorted.
the powerlines will look after themselfs and in 10 months of constant use they only got confused once and i simply re-set them.
also you can stream music and films to the xbox so he watch films in his room.. for this you need to share the media on the machine where it is stored using windows media player 11.
I love my Xbox and my network, once you get started you can find it hard to stop sometimes.0 -
I too use the powerline/homeplug solution.
Better explanation here of how it works/is set up. There are other suppliers of these devices not just Solwise but I've found them great over the last year.
