Avatars & Thanks buttons have disappeared

Can anyone tell me how to restore avatars and thanks buttons?
I had them last week, but this week they have disappeared.
I did have a problem with my computer and had to get a clever friend to fix it. I think he took everything off the hard drive then re loaded it all (having saved my documents and photos).
I miss the pretty pictures!
Help me and I will use the Thanks button!

I have no idea why, but as soon as I posted, they all came back!

You wouldn't have seen the thanks buttons or the avatars if you were logged out
Then when you logged in to post the above they would've re-appeared0 -
