Out of best before date food - Tesco?

Options
Hi, can someone advise please?

I've just been to Tesco and bought some dried Porcini mushrooms to go in a risotto.

Just put them in to soak and was draining them when I noticed the BBE date in the pack is August 2008

Can anyone advise where I stand on this please? If I take them back to the store, I imagine I will just get offered a refund - however I really think this is totally unacceptable...

Anyone?

Thanks

  • If they are magic mushrooms, I would put the cat out first. Then not drive for two days. Then, as Freda has done, just take reciept and packet back to CS desk, create a right stink (if you eat them!) and they'll give you a refund.

But be careful of the cat

Why would you receive anything more? Have you received some sort of expenditure or trauma from this experience?

You will get back exactly what is deserved and that is a refund! In future i suggest checking packaging for Best before dates and display until date! Although i do agree this should have been checked 8 months ago.

I didn;t mean that just a refund would be totally unacceptable more that food dated August 08 is still on the shelf....

I have to hold my hands up and say the only food I would check the BBE/SB date on is fresh stuff - however I still think with a BBE date of that is really really bad.

Just glad I noticed before I ate them

On the odd occasion when I've discovered stuff has ben sold past its sell by date, Tesco has refunded me the full cost - and also replaced the item free of charge. They told me this is their standard practice.

Based on this I would expect my money back and some free mushrooms.

A bit of a harsh comment ! The OP clearly wasn't expecting a huge settlement, she was just asking what people thought. I got the impression she didn't really want to make a fuss.

I'm constantly amazed at how some people feel the burning urge to jump down other peoples throats when a simple, polite question is asked. If people made more of an effort to be pleasant and helpful the world (to say nothing of this site) would be a much happier place.

Not really, i was just responding by asking what the OP felt they should get as they clearly said a refund was not enough.

I also went on to agree that they should not have been on the shelf and they will get what they deserve i.e. a refund.

While selling a "best before" after its date isn't illegal (unlike a "use by") it should be checked on a rotation basis within Tesco. If I was the duty manager who was dealing with you I would offer you a refund and probably a gift card. Just remember when you go in, be polite about it. You will get more help if you stay calm and don't go in all guns blazing.
