Co-operative close account.

My partner has been with the co-op with a basic account for a few years. Last week he had a letter saying that they were no longer operating this account and he had 30 days to transfer his banking. He has until 6th April (took 3 weeks for the letter to arrive) meanwhile they have already cancelled all his direct debits which he found out when he got numerous letters of missed payments. Has anyone else suffered this. I cannot understand why they would close the account without offering another. After an argument on the phone about the cancelled dd's he has successfully opened a current account with Lloyds TSB. If the companies with the missed payments add charges to the accounts will the co-op be liable to pay them. They argue they sent the letter it is not their fault. Any opinions would be appreciated.
