I bought raspberry and tayberry canes from Aldi too, but I havent planted them out yet because of the frosts etc. They are in the porch,I look the other day and they have leaves etc shooting off them, although I havent opened the packaging etc yet. Are they OK to plant outside? Also should I put my garlic and strawberries outside too?

I started growing last year for the first time, although my family always have. It's my first home you see, so after a learning curve last year, this year I intend to grow potatoes, corn on the cob, leeks, parsnips, carrots and sprouts. That's about all the veg we eat anyway, but most of them are regular, especially spuds. I've got an incredibly overgrown patch of strawberry plants that needs attending to as well. So far I have dug the garden over and moved the compost around, but it keeps raining, which is a pain.

Also, my boyfriends mum moved near us recently and she wants to gro veg too, but doesn't really know what she's doing, so I have set her on the way with a list of things to compost, and have been getting her garden in order for planting; the previous owner seemed to think the garden was a dustbin, so it's hard work.

    Hi Ella,

it is a bit early for sowing courgettes and tomatoes.

I usually sow my tomatoes around the beginning of April, as they need about eight weeks from sowing to planting out. Courgettes grow really quickly, so six weeks is probably about right.

Sow tomato seeds thinly in a three inch pot, and then transplant them gently one to a three inch pot when they grow their first true leaves.

I usually sow only about 4 more seeds than I need plants.

Sow courgette seeds one each to a three inch pot. They grow really fast, and will probably be alright to stay in this pot until you plant them out.

These plants are tender (ie frost will kill them) and they need good light to grow into strong plants. About two weeks before you want to plant them out,(say about mid May) you need to 'harden them off', which means getting them used to the outside world with rain, sun and wind! Put them out somewhere sheltered during the day and bring back indoors overnight. After you plant them out you can protect them with a bit of fleece ( a light white thin material available cheaply from garen centres) for a week or so. After that they will be fine. You will also need to keep them slug and snail free.

If I have over simplified this, I am sorry, but I wasn't sure just how much knowledge you may already have - I hope it doesn't sound like I am talking down to you, it certainly isn't meant that way!

Growing food is really easy, so enjoy - and be warned that it is very addictive. You'll be getting an allotment next!

Where do you get your seed potatoes from Wendrie? Have I missed something?

I only grow a few in buckets so plant the 'Concorde' salad potatoes bought from the greengrocery section of Lidl's.
  • Might be a little late for most people but went into a local Netto Supermarket & paid 17 pence per packet. Cheepest I'd seen around.

Lidl & Wilkies were also cheep.

Hoping to grow some stuff this year, however the closest I have got to gardening before is 'Weed Killer'. I'll see what I end up with.
