I really want to grow my own fruit and veg can anyone point me in the right direction for getting started?

I don't want to spend loads of money on setting up.

I do have a garden with a lot of free borders to use but not sure the soil is that great.

I was thinking of using some grow bags if not too expensive and I have one very large pot as well.

I bought a packet of seeds meant for children to grow their own veggie patch, in the hope if they were for children I couldn't go far wrong!

I know now is quite a good time to start for a lot of the produce so am hoping to get going with it soon.

Try wild strawberries. Last year I planted these in a border and had a plentiful supply for most of the summer. They were very sweet and I enjoyed them all the more for knowing that I had planted them.

I've been out over the weekend and bought some more seed trays, a hanging basket with liner, strawberry plants and some flower seeds already to set too on the garden. OH has promised to go and buy two big bags of multi-purpose compost one night after work as they won't fit in the car with us in it :D We've also bought some wire mesh and wire to put up along the one wall without any fencing above it with the idea of growing a clematis or honeysuckle along it. ;)

    Hi Sarah

I've never grown anything before either so dont take my word for anything. I'm going to do this year though and I've been reading lots of books and stuff.

I'm also going to try and keep it cheap and simple. Im going to be growing mixed salad leaves in one pot, with perpetual spinach (supposed to be really easy) in another. I've got spring onions (going in a grow-bag) tomatoes (one grow bag type, one hanging basket type). I'm also doing courgettes and dwarf beans in a pot. thinking of trying to grow potatoes too. I did chit a couple of potatoes and left them on the kitchen side, Teenage daughter got emabrrased that I had mouldy taters in the kitchen when her friend came round and chucked them away!

I think all the things I've chosen are relatively easy and can go in pots. OoOh strawberries too (buying from wilkos). Seeds are from 39p & BOGOF at wilkos too.

I know now is quite a good time to start for a lot of the produce so am hoping to get going with it soon.

Start to save your food trays, tomato punnets make great sead trays, chicken, turkey etc comes in ready made saucers, just right for fitting on the windowsill

Decent soil is the key, but so is plenty of sunshire, so make sure whereever you plant. It will be in the sun, at least when it does shine. Also keep well watered.

Grow bags are about £1.00 and are excellent for tomato plants and courgetts, only three tom plants per bag though, no more, plus tomato feed is worth the investment and time

Finally, watch out for frosts, as they are a killer, best to wait a month if your in Devon and at least 2 and ½ months if your in Scotland. Sounds along time I know but it'll be worth it.

    Best of luck

P.S. You'll be overun with courgetts, trust me

And once you have them it is a nightmare to get rid of them again. And they spread like wildfire.

Also they are a very small berry so you needs loads to get a decent dish full.
