Car Hire in USA and Canada

I’m looking for some help with regards Car Hire.
We are planning a holiday to USA and Canada this year. We are flying into New York, then going to travel to Boston, New Hampshire, Vermont, Montreal, Ottawa and finally Toronto. We’ll be spending a couple of days in each place and I plan on picking the hire car up from JFK Airport or downtown New York then dropping it off in Toronto for our flight home. Does anyone know the cheapest car hire company that will allow you to do such a thing? Hertz are priced around £550 which I thought was pretty expensive, however, that may be a realistic quote.
Thanks in advance

Try www.avis.co.uk
If you are a Barclays customer, use the AWD code W300012 - you are entitled to use that one.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Be careful if booking online because most companies charge a one-way fee on top of internet price. We are picking up a car in Seattle and dropping off in San Francisco which is costing $300 on top of car hire price. Check small print carefully or give them a call. Hope this helps.0

i've used them about 20 times and never found anyone cheaper0 -
I think that there's a golden triangle between San Fran, Vegas and LA where one way rentals don't cost extra (as so many people do it). But elsewhere, I'm pretty sur eyou'll find it'll cost extra.0

Unfortunately, can't use this to select pick up in the US and drop off in Canada but thanks anyway.0 -
In terms of one-way drop fees, the cheapest firm i found was National Car - I picked a car up in Chicago and dropped it off in San Francisco - They charged us less than half the price of all the other companies
I will be using them again when i do a similar thing later in the year.0 -
I used Avis when I did Canada to US one way. The price quoted was the final price. I even called the office in Toronto to confirm this. Also, make sure you book on www.avis.co.uk as the price always includes your LDW, CDW etc. Using avis.com doesnt!!!If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

I'd advise doing NYC on foot, getting the very pleasant Acela Express train from NYC to Boston,,doing Boston on foot then car hiring out of Boston. NYC will be bad news for car hire and parking and you dont need one. Boston will be less so. Both cities can be done on foot.
I recommend www.alamo.com note .com not .co.uk0
