Cancelling BT Broadband & Moving to Sky

Hi everyone
Sorry if this scenario has been posted before. I did a quick search but couldn't find anything relevant.
Basically my DH's hours have been cut at work and we need to cut our outgoings accordingly. Since we moved to this property in Feb 07 we have had broadband + telephone service from BT which is now costing £40-45 per month, plus Sky TV at £21 per month = £60ish per month for all three.
We can't afford to do this anymore and have noticed that we can get all three from Sky for around £37 per month which is more within our budget.
The trouble is that we remember BT calling us sometime last year (winter, so Oct/Nov time) asking us if we wanted to renew our BB which we agreed to. I can't find anything in writing - no paper correspondance and no sign of an email so I can't see if it was a 12 or 18 month contract, or what date it was taken out.
What I want to get an idea of is whether BT are likely to enforce the rest of the contract - which we can't afford anymore, and if there's likely to be a cancellation fee.
I know the simple answer is to call BT and ask but tbh I'm dreading the inevitable queuing/communication difficulties which I always encounter when I call them.

Erm I'm gonna try and not sound harsh
If you need to cut outgoings why don't you just get rid of the tv package and buy a freeview box (tenner from tescos). I can understand the importance of Internet as you can actually make savings by using the internet. But a TV package is just a waste of money nowadays.
but it seems you may be stuck in a contract with BT so probably best to speak to them and reduce your package.If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I entirely agree with you Cat but it's one of those arguements with DH it's not worth even getting into :embarasse
I suppose I was just hoping to get the same service(s) for less money.

Yes, they certainly will enforce it. If you re-contracted last Oct/Nov you will be locked in for 12 or 18 months from then. You can leave if you want but they will bill you what you would have paid until the end of the contract.
If you can manage without the Sky premium channels, then why not switch to Freesat from Sky, which will only cost you the price of a viewing card, (£25-ish) since you already have the dish and box? Paying for non-premium Sky service is pointless, as even a full Freesat from Sky install is only about the cost of 6 month's basic Sky subscription service.
You might also look at changing your phone service, as you may be out of contract on this (you only mentioned re-signing for broadband with BT).No free lunch, and no free laptop
