I also used to buy Neways stuff, but like Smiley-mum, let my membership lapse. Used to get their deodorant and dentalcare stuff too - all excellent and without all those nasty chemicals.

Currently I use Aveda on myself (was about £24/litre last time I bought Shampure, but that was well over a year ago and I wash my hair every 2-3 days - works out cheaper than 'normal' stuff.) Boys are still using Neways shampoo and will be for a while (and I use Aloe Dent toothpaste on us all now too)

The reason these shampoos don't lather up is BECAUSE the don't contain nasties like SLS, SLES and Propylene Glycol. We as consumers have been brainwashed into believing that to have clean hair we need a torrent of silken bubbles cascading down our backs a la those ads. The lather-making ingredients do nothing to cleanse your hair. It takes a while to realise that you need very little shampoo and you don't need loads of lather to wash your hair well.

BTW - I see to recall reading that these chemicals in shampoos have been linked to serious eye problems later on and that 'baby' shampoos are particularly bad.

I use MOP products. They do have laurel sulphate in but it's from a palm oil derivative. Like Aveda you need so little that it works out cheaper in the long run.

If you want the best conditioned hair in the world stop washing it all together! Just use plain water It will go extremely oily and maybe a bit smelly at first but hair is actually self cleaning if you take this money saving option it will take around 3 months for your hair to rebalance itself.

  • I have used the Green People range (cheapest at: http://www.discountvitaminsandherbs.com ) as well as Jason (From Beauty Naturals or Natural Collection) and the Faith in Nature range - all good, but my favourite is probably the Tropical Coconut shampoo bar from the natural soap company: http://www.naturalsoap.co.uk/cpshso.htm

I think the Naturalsoap products look brilliant, but I read on their website:

"our other toiletries are produced using a pre-made base which we scent and finish off here. These products therefore do contain some of the typical preservatives you might find in commercial products, including SLS which some people try to avoid, even though we then scent and colour them using more 'natural' ingredients. "

So watch the other stuff if you are avoiding SLS!

Try Neals Yard - not cheap but last for ages. You can buy baseline products that you then add your own bits to (such as essential oils), or their own products. The baseline products are £6.15 for 500ml online - but I am sure in the shop they sell these in larger quantities.

The shampoos themselves are around £20.50 for a litre. Thats around £4 for a 200ml bottle. You would need to decant but should last a year I imagine.

They only use plant based detergents.

They also do conditioners - there is a scalp treatment based on coconut oil too (you can buy the cocnut oil on its own quite cheaply - either from them or other suppliers). Again not cheap but the ingredients are pure. Dont seem to be any dearer than all the other green products either.

Their moisurisers are lovely too - I had a night cream a few years ago - costs 1/2 the price of top range ones such as lancome. (Still more expensive than free time delay products from boots that I am using at the moment)

They also do a book "recipies for natural beauty" for 9.99 that I had a browse through - there was a banana recipies for a hair mask that I fancied trying for example, plus recipies for shampoos, face masks etc. http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/shop/bin/pxisapi1.exe/catalogue?level=600402 - not sure if available on amazon as I havent got round to checking. There is another "natural health and body care" for 17.99 that is more comprehensive - but if you only want the beauty stuff the 9.99 one looked good. They also do workshops from time to time - you would have to check the local store.
