We do have a post box, so that's fine. But these were items that needed to be signed for.

not much that can be done im afraid
it really depends on the duty
eg if a 9am SD item goes out with a driver and there is no answer it will then be given to the foot postman to make a 2nd attempt
the problem here is if its urgent then they may have to wait a few hours for it rather than collect it from the delivery office
you can never win

A place I used to work at didn't have a letterbox (because of how the building had been converted and the antics of local youths and what they'd like to...um... deposit I assume). We had to set up a redirection on the mail to a staff member's home address and they brought the post into work as a work around. This was a few years ago mind and the Royal Mail didn't offer the bazillion and one different services they do now.

Thanks for all of your responses. It looks like we'll have to bite the bullet and come up with a lockable letterbox for evenings and weekends.

At the minute our admin girl is enjoying the fresh air and sunshine when walking to the sorting office to collect the mail so the letterbox can wait for now..... ;-)
