Do I need a letterbox

We are currently having problems at work receiving mail. Because we are a self contained office (i.e., we don't share a building with anyone), we have our own letterbox. However, because the letterbox is on a main road, we have screwed it shut after receiving nice "gifts" over the weekend (kebabs, rubbish, etc).

There have been no problems for 4 years but recently we have stopped receiving mail on a Friday. We complained and nothing has changed so last Friday someone from the office went to the mail sorting office to complain and were told that, because they couldn't post the mail through the letterbox, we would have to go to the delivery office and collect our post every day. They said that they have buzzed the office and no-one answered so they are not delivering anymore.

My question is - do we need to have a letterbox at all (legally)? I cannot find anything on Royal Mail's website so would appreciate some "ammunition" I can then take to the sorting office manager.;)

Cheers

where would they put it, if you didn't have one?
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

They could knock on the door - the same as they do when mail won't fit through someone's box.

See what you mean. Can you not get a secure letterbox?

according to this, written by a postman (probably), they should knock on the door.

a delivery point is a letterbox
given the OP doesnt have an office with direct access eg. being able to just walk in then they should have a letterbox
no letter box and no answer means a non accesable delivery point

Get a PO box number and collect it yourself.

why? thats what the OP doesnt want to do
fact is you need to make your office open for delivery
whether that be by an open door or an letterbox/safepoint then thats down to you
i have someone who hasnt had a letterbox for months.they only got one sorted when i started returning their mail
its no fun taking the same mail out day after day when nobodys home

posties are under increasing pressure to take more mail out and time wasted tryingt to get rid of mail is no good to anyone

Can you not modify the letterbox so that it can be locked at the weekend to avoid the kebabs and junk?

Our postman at work beeps his horn and expects us to go out to him ( we have a letter box ) , sometimes he hurls it through the open warehouse door !!

My understanding was that they didn't want a letter box and couldn't manage to answer the postman's knock on the door of their business. Seemed a sensible solution to me.

Not sure what the solution would be really but if the letterbox is screwed shut and the buzzer isn't answered then I can't really see what the postie could do with the mail. Having spoken with our very nice postie I know they are under pressure to deliver an awful lot of mail so they don't really want to hang about trying to deliver mail when no-one is there. Maybe a solution would be to go to your local sorting office and discuss this with the manager there - there must be other people near you that are suffering from posted kebabs so maybe a solution can be found?
