Try to get a bus tour that will take you to the top of Calton Hill. The views from there are quite something. The one I got last time also took us around St.Mary Loch which was lovely too and gives you a real feel of how isolated Edinburgh was at for much of it's history.
I visited the Edinburgh Vaults Experience last time and though this is all staged it gives you a good historical grounding for the night walks in the city. I'd do the Mary Kings Close walk on the first night then the Vaults walk on the second. Besides getting to see the 'underworld' of Edinburgh, you also get a great history lesson delivered by young actors who really know their stuff, which did surprise me. The Vaults have twice featured on 'Most Haunted' now and they are interesting and quite spooky. The walk was well worth the £12 we paid each and we were in the pub by 9.30.
Personally, I like a quick afternoon pint in the smallest pub in Scotland of Flesh Market Close, then up to the Castle at dusk because the walk back down the Royal Mile when all the lights come in is great.
A few of the best pubs in town (by my reckoning) are Deacon Brodies on the Mile, Nicol Edwards down the side of the Radisson by the entrance to the vaults, Bannermans on Cowgate, Under The Stairs on Merchant St and Pivo on Calton Road (down the steps facing the King James Hotel).
Have fun!0 -

The Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia were highlights for me when I visited Edinburgh last year - walk or bus it everywhere, driving is a nightmare.0
