Natwest current plus account

Hi everyone, finally decided to take the plunge and post.
I recently changed banks from barclays to natwest and yesterday recieved my card. The card says maestro on the front of it, can anyone tell me if this is the same as the visa debit I had before? ie can I pay for things in shops and on the internet? I just assumed I would get the same type of card as before?

Thankful for any help.

Yes you can pay for things in shops/internet

however with visa debit cards you have visa chargeback if something goes wrong in a similar way to section 75 protection for credit cards -

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases#debitcard

However maestro chargeback is different and only applies if the item is from a foreign country and company goes bankrupt (so no claim for no delivery etc.)

also http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/natwest-bank/170196-natwest-maestro-chargeback.html (haven't read it myself)

Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking that I'd done something wrong or something and they had given me a cashcard that I couldnt use in shops.
    Thanks again.

In terms of Natwest, a cashcard is a Solo debit card.

Maestro is accepted as widely as VISA these days.
  • Thank you book.

I read somewhere that natwest were changing to visa soon. does anyone have any info on this?

    Yes.

Probably the RBS group has decided that Natwest could have that change as well, after the announcement of RBS. Hopefully, their basic bank accounts will be VISA debit just like LTSB and Barclays.

Anyway, we will see sometime in 2009 which banks will be changing to VISA.
  • Just read about maestro on google. so maestro is part of mastercard like some of my credit cards. basically their version of visa debit I take it? Shame if natwest get rid of maestro then. I kinda like having something different to pay with should I need to.

Sortakinda. The Maestro network currently in use in the UK was, until about 2003, known as Switch, then rebranded as Maestro after it was purchased by MasterCard, in line with MCs other European debit card operations. The Switch/Maestro network and MasterCard's are completely seperate, whereas Visa and Visa Debit are much more intertwined.
